You thought about what you’d done for a moment... Hotch held up the ‘piece de resistance’ of yours and Reid’s master plan. You shut your eyes and tried not to laugh, remembering how the whole of several Hotch shaped pinatas were beat to death in the bullpen and how thousands of orbeez poured from them. Sure, people slipped over but you didn’t see anyone who wasn’t laughing. Derek was beside himself with laughter in fact. Nobody was hurt, that was the main thing. And the look on Aaron’s face as he emerged from his office, a one in a million moment, never to be replicated. He didn’t think it was a very good birthday prank at all.

“Happy birthday?” You said hesitantly with eyebrows raised, waiting for him to backhand you across the table for your smart mouth. “The bullpen is covered in rainbow balls and you think now is a good time to wish me a happy birthday?” Hotch’s stern face bore into you still. “You know, your face may look mean and stern... but I think you’re kinda sweet under there” You weren’t finished testing Hotch’s boundaries today, clearly revealing your affinity for him. “Are you flirting with me?” Hotch’s expression did not change, the flame of aggravation still burning in his eyes.

“Oh, you finally noticed” Your voice was rife with sarcasm, hand playfully slapping your forehead as you smiled back at him softly. In an instant, his face changed. It was the first time you had seen him relax, the first time his face wasn’t firm or contorted to look angry. “I hadn’t noticed” He cleared his throat, adjusting himself in his chair as his posture softened as well. The corner of Aaron’s lip twisted into a slight smile as he looked at you, and then down to his desk, almost like he was embarrassed. “You really had no idea, huh?” You teased him, standing, and walking to the other side of his desk, leaning against it next to him. Aaron shook his head uncomfortably, digging around his head for words that didn’t make him sound stupid.

There was a long awkward silence, you perpetuated it with a smirk on your face, watching as Hotch tried to find the words he wanted. You watched his eyes scrambling for a response, any response. “Do you want to go get a drink?” Hotch asked. Taken aback, surprise on your face, you were left speechless for a second; Hotch shook his head, knowing he should not have asked you that. “Wait, wait, yes of course I want to go get a drink with you” Accidentally placing your hands on his shoulders as he spun around on his chair, “I’ve been waiting for you to notice me since I started working here” You sighed, hands rolling over the muscles in his shoulders. Aaron relaxed under your touch, slowly standing up next to you. His hands on your waist, Hotch pulled you forwards into him and gave you a quick kiss, pulling away to see your face. That same surprise stretched over your face, erased by Aaron’s hand gently sliding along your cheek and into your hair as he pulled you in again. This time for a deeper and much more passionate kiss; your tongues fighting at each other, your hands pressing into his lower back.
