He hasn't gotten injured as bad as Frieza but he did get a hole blown through his side that had damaged a few organs. Someone found out he was the one causing the wars on planets and tried to kill him but since everyone seemed to trust frost it was the guy who attacked him that go punished. He also doesn't heal as quick as his counterpart so it was a pretty slow recovery.
I like to imagine that ice-jin voices start out on the higher octave when they're young and will get lower as they grow, especially during puberty. Some, however, are late bloomers, and their voices will stay on the higher scale until much later. I like to have this as an explanation on why Frieza's voice changed from a chain-smoker woman to a refined gentleman. His voice just decided to wait until he died to actually change.
