“Call out to her,” the medium instructs. “I’m here, Addison.” “Tell her you love her.” John tastes bile somewhere in the back of his throat, listening to Larson comply, his face a mask of perfect calm. “It’s alright, my sweet girl. You did so well. I’m so proud of you. I love you.” “Tell her you’re sorry.” He sees the moment the shift happens—the blood drains from Larson’s face in an instant, his eyes go suddenly wide. “What?” he says, quiet, in a tone any sane person would recognize as warning. The medium only repeats, slow and insistent: “Tell her that you’re sorry.”

For a moment, he entirely forgot he had an audience. He hugged the worn thing to his chest, and felt a sense of relief bleed through him.
