The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want... (a Shepherd protects, feeds, guides and provides for his sheep...a sheep has no worries!) He maketh me lie down in green pastures... (Rest is good for the sheep- good for the soul- good for us... not just physical rest...as in sleep... but also spiritual rest... resting in Him!) He leads me besides still waters... (There's something soothing and calming about the water that is still... peaceful. It's refreshing... Its also much easier to drink from calm waters!) He restores my soul! (When things get downtrodden and heavy on the mind... going to the Lord restores... refreshes... replenishes!) I shall fear no evil, for You art with me. (I don't have a spirit of fear, but if power {YOURS}, love and a sound mind. Fear will never conquer me, because You, oh Lord, already have!) Your rod and Thy staff, they comfort me... (You remain close to me and lead me through, all the way. Your authority is my strength and my peace. I'll never be lonely for You are near.) You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows... (You anoint me with the fragrance of Your Holy Spirit; You give me all I can drink of You until my heart overflows!) Yes, indeed!!! You are my Lord, my Shepherd, my God! Trees that survive powerful storms remain standing after the storm passes because they have a strong and deep root system. It is extremely vital to remain rooted and grounded in Christ in order to withstand the trials and storms that life will bring. (And there will certainly be many.) The Apostle Paul warns believers to not be tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine! Know WHAT you believe, WHY you believe it, and WHOM you believe-and unite with others who believe the same. Being yoked together with others sharing same doctrine and being planted in one spot is vital for genuine growth. Many times large trees are up rooted in storms because they have been growing in shallow soil and never had much depth... However this was never visible on the outside but was only revealed when the storms came. How true is this in the lives of many believers today. We truly don’t know the depth of our faith in God until we are struck with the storms of life. The good news is that Jesus told us that a wise man who builds his house on the rock, though the rain, floods and the winds blow and beat on that house, it will not fall, for it has been founded on the rock. He has given us our instructions- but unless we read them, and apply them- they are of no use to us. The wise man builds upon the rock, a firm foundation... and is rooted and grounded in Christ. WHEN the storms come, the depth of your root will be exposed, THEN the true test comes. Deep roots of faith will hold you steady THROUGH the storm, shallow roots lacking faith will succumb to the storms effects.
