“Cookies?” Javert’s eyes lit up illuminated an even more brilliant blue from the crisp white snow about him. However, he quickly shook his head, more so to himself than to Jean, in order to focus on the task at hand.
He pulled his thick red scarf tighter about him, its woollen fabric obscuring his wind-chapped lips, and beckoned the man out with a dramatic wave of his arm. “Oh, you’ll love it, mon amour! Just around back.” The Inspector’s words were muffled by his scarf, but the cold winter weather didn’t dampen his mood in the slightest.
Trudging through the snow excitedly at full-tilt, Javert stumbled a few times on the way to show Jean to his masterpiece. He stopped before the know structure, consisting of three misshapen balls of snow, measuring about a metre and a half in height.
Though crafted by an unpracticed hand, it showed an impressive amount of time and dedication put into it. An old carrot, one which was usually saved as a treat for Gymont, served as a nose for the snowman, and poked out over a lopsided smile formed from small pebbles carefully selected from the garden.
Hastily, Javert reached up to adjust the velvet, black Inspector’s hat which rested crooked over the snowman’s face, obscuring his eyes, then froze. “Jean,” he asked, “Can you fix that hat for me, please?”
Jean had to admire the way his eyes lit up at the mention of cookies. It was good seeing him excited about things. Something ineffable was kindled in him. Sometimes the spark came from Jean himself, but he tried not to cherish those times above the others.
He followed at a slower pace, careful not to get snow in his boots, keeping Javert in sight. The minute the snowman came into view, he smiled even despite the cold. It really was a delightful creation; even its imperfections were charming. He threw an arm around Javert’s shoulders and pulled him close to admire it, only to find his arms suddenly empty again.
Recovering quickly, Jean reached up and with his height advantage was easily able to straighten the hat into a more presentable position, then stood back. “There we go!” he declared, beaming. “All set. This house is safe with this guy on patrol.” Automatically he went to ruffle Javert’s hair, then stopped sheepishly when he realized that the hat made it impossible. He settled instead for kissing his red nose. “It’s wonderful, mon amour.”
