Hey 👋🏾👩🏾‍🦱 . I don’t know about you, but I was brought up with tough love, which in comparison to the other extreme of parenting, SUCKED!!! ...I actually knew someone whose parents would pretend they passed wind, when it was their child, so their child didn’t have to say “Excuse Me”, because God forbid their child be subject to taking responsibility for normal body movements, like everyone else 🙄🤷🏾‍♀️??! . As a CHILD I used to envy the children of parents who allowed them to get away with everything, but now AS A PARENT, I see the importance of FINDING A BALANCE. I think these “7 Things” are the #KEY 🔑🔑 to achieving that. . No one is perfect, including me. I learn as I go along, but if you’re hoping to improve your parenting and if like me, you can appreciate the things that your parents were “Great 👍🏾 vs. 👎🏾 Not So Great” at; I believe that some of the things that come to mind, can be found in these “7 Things”... . #BreakingGenerationalPatterns . 𝔹𝕣𝕖𝕒𝕜𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝔾𝕖𝕟𝕖𝕣𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕒𝕝 ℙ𝕒𝕥𝕥𝕖𝕣𝕟𝕤... I’m gonna include some statements below that should give an indication of the time I grew up in and resonate with many of you: . ▪️ Children should be seen and not heard. ▪️ Stop crying or I will give you something to cry for! ▪️ So and so’s child got this award, so why didn’t you get it? ▪️ If you keep pulling your face, the wind will blow and our will stick like that. ▪️ You’re not allowed to cry, because bullies will see that and pick on you more. ▪️ No, the reason you did this is because you’re stupid. . These are just a few, most of which I can remember either being said to me or being said at the time I grew up in. I’m sure you can think of many yourself. . Whilst I can laugh at most or appreciate the sentiment, it took a long time to get rid of those voices and every now and then, they pop up on my moments of doubt. . They also shape the way that we speak to our children in mostly good, but also some bad ways. They are negative anchors and whilst the intent behind them maybe good, they can be quite destructive because there is no view of trying to understand the message being communicated by parent or child, like; . ▪️ Learn to enjoy yourself, whilst allowing me to enjoy some peace and quiet. ▪️ Go and have a think about what you’ve done, I don’t feel sorry for you, you know better than this! ▪️ Why are you pulling your face?! ▪️ Stand up for yourself, by looking them in the eye and not responding to their cajoling. Bullies are always going to exist and are usually jealous.
