Angry rant time!!!
As an American K-Pop fan, I get the pleasure of viewing the opinions of both K-netz and I-netz, and I have a pretty good understanding of what makes both sides tick. What truly really infuriates me, however, is when one group attacks or makes sweepingly accusatory assumptions about the other when they aren’t that much better themselves.
Or maybe I just need to get off netizenbuzz.
Also, if anyone in the entire world really thinks that their idols are 100% pure and wholesome characters without a single flaw, please wake up. I bet you can still see flaws among your family members, friends, and anyone else you know personally, yet you would never criticize them the way you anonymously drag celebrities.
Sorry to break it to you all, particularly international fans, but every single K-celeb probably has done or will do something you disagree with, even if it hasn’t been publicized in a scandal or blasted by Allkpop, and sometimes you’re just going to have to get over it. And I’m in no way supporting the wrong things my biases have done, but I’m fully aware that they all grew up in South Korea, where the conservative culture and lifestyle is vastly different from where I live in San Francisco, and I should not expect their words and opinions to conform to my liberal standards. Of course I don’t support the various sexist or fat shaming or racist comments that constantly arise in the Korean entertainment industry, but I also understand that Korea is not a hipster, rainbow-flag-friendly country and that that is the audience K-celebs are catering to. I lived in Seoul for only 6 weeks, yet that environment was blatantly obvious the second I stepped off the plane. Korea may be taking baby steps towards feminism and progressiveness and all that, but they definitely aren’t there yet.
ALSO, netizens have got to stop being so goddamn hypocritical. Call a celeb ugly, yet insult them for getting plastic surgery, even if it’s due to medical reasons. Call a celeb fat but then tell them to eat more when they get too skinny. Tell celebs to date freely but then send death threats when they publicize relationships.
I feel so so so bad for Korean celebrities, more so than I do for celebrities from other countries, because of all this unnecessary bullshit that they constantly have to deal with. Regardless of what antis say, I stand by my biases, and I can’t even imagine how strong they are to be facing this shit every single day.
