I am SO SORRY that I have practically vanished for so long!
Real life sucked so hard for quite some time and I'm slowly getting my feet back under me and my life sorted. I hope.
(And I found my password again so, yeay!)
Consider this as a warning: I'm probably going to be reblogging A LOT and probably quite out of date stuff, too.

Hi! My nameâs Qwerty and Iâll be your Dracula tour guide today đ
Please find below a summary of each day's events as well as clarifications and explanations for any words, phrases, or customs that may not be super familiar to folks who donât read 19th Century literature regularly.
My plan is to do this for every update, so Iâll be releasing them concurrently with any correspondences we have from our mutual friend Jonathan -- and anyone else we meet along the way!
Content Warning: This excerpt contains imprisonment and coercive control, psychological horror, graphic blood imagery, attempted violence, suicidal ideation (situational/despair-driven), religious distress, dehumanisation, and intense hopelessness, as well as racist language typical of the period.
Summary
Jonathan wakes up just before the dawn, believing these may be the final words he ever writes. Convinced that death is near, he kneels in prayer so that, if he dies, he will meet death spiritually prepared. As daylight arrives, he feels the familiar sense of safety that morning has come to represent and rushes to the castle's front door, believing escape is finally within reach. His hope is immediately crushed: although the chains and bolts can be removed, the door has once again been locked after Dracula returned, making escape impossible.
Driven by desperation, Jonathan resolves to climb once more into Dracula's chambers and search for the missing key, deciding that even death at Dracula's hands would be preferable to remaining imprisoned. Descending again into the ruined chapel, he discovers Dracula lying within one of the great wooden boxes. This time, however, the Count has changed dramatically. Rather than the deathly figure Jonathan saw days earlier, Dracula appears rejuvenated: his hair has darkened, his cheeks are full, his skin flushed beneath its pallor, and fresh blood stains his lips and chin. Jonathan realises with horror that Dracula has recently fed and that each victim restores his youth and strength.
Unable to find the key, Jonathan is overwhelmed by the knowledge that he himself has helped bring such a creature to England. Fearing the countless future victims Dracula may claim in London, he attempts to destroy him with a shovel. The blow glances harmlessly away after Dracula's terrifying gaze seems to paralyse him, leaving only a wound across the forehead before the coffin lid falls shut once more. Jonathan is left wondering whether the paralysis was supernatural or simply the result of terror.
As he tries to decide what to do next, Jonathan hears the arrival of the Romani and Slovaks. Hoping to escape through whatever entrance they use, he races back toward Dracula's room, but before he can investigate, a sudden gust slams the door to the winding stair shut behind him, trapping him once again. Listening helplessly, he hears the workers carrying away the great boxes of earth, hammering the lids closed, and finally locking the castle behind them as they depart with Dracula hidden inside.
Left entirely alone in the castle with the three vampire women, Jonathan concludes that remaining there is a fate worse than death. Declaring that Mina bears no resemblance to the monstrous women below, he resolves to make one final escape attempt by climbing farther down the castle walls than ever before. Taking some of Dracula's gold in case he survives, Jonathan prepares either to reach civilisation or, failing that, to throw himself from the precipice, believing that even such a death would preserve his humanity better than whatever fate Dracula intends for him. His diary closes with a farewell to Mina and the hope that God's mercy is greater than the monsters surrounding him.
Clarifications, Explanations, and Footnotes
Prayer Before Action - Jonathan's instinct is first to pray and only then to act. His faith has evolved considerably since the beginning of the novel: the sceptical English solicitor who politely accepted a peasant woman's crucifix now entrusts both his life and death to God's judgement.
The Cock-Crow - Drawing on both folklore and the New Testament, the cock crow at dawn is a recurring symbol of hope, divine order, and temporary safety.
Leech - A leech is a blood-feeding parasite long associated with medicine and disease. Although there was briefly a "leech mania" in early Victorian medicine, it had largely declined by the time Dracula was written and published. Jonathan's description of Dracula as "a filthy leech" emphasises both his grotesque dependence upon blood and that he is a parasite upon humanity.
Basilisk - In medieval legend, the basilisk was a monstrous serpent or reptile whose gaze could kill or paralyse those who looked directly at it.
The Boxes of Earth - The fifty boxes of Transylvanian soil are finally loaded for transport. Jonathan now understands that they are central to Dracula's move to England and constitute a vital part of his plans.
The Ethics of Killing Dracula - Jonathan's attempted attack is framed not as vengeance but as an act of moral responsibility. He believes that allowing Dracula to reach London would condemn countless future victims, making the destruction of the Count an obligation rather than an act of personal revenge.
The Failure of Rational Heroism - Jonathan possesses courage, intelligence, and determination, yet these qualities repeatedly prove insufficient against supernatural evil. The novel continually frustrates the Victorian belief that rationality and individual action alone can overcome every obstacle.
Dracula as Colonial Invader - Jonathan's horror increasingly shifts from his own survival to the consequences of Dracula reaching England. The Count becomes an 'inverse coloniser' and a symbolic representation of many xenophobic fears at the time: an ancient Eastern aristocrat carrying death into the imperial centre, where he intends to establish a growing population of vampires among London's millions.
"Mina is a woman, and there is nought in common." - Jonathan's outburst separates Mina completely from the vampire women, presenting one as the ideal of loving humanity and the others as monstrous parodies of femininity. Modern readers often note that this reflects Victorian ideals of womanhood while simultaneously underscoring the novel's recurring contrast between nurturing love and predatory appetite. Jonathan's remark reflects a Victorian ideal of womanhoodâone that separates Mina from the Brides by treating nurturing, chastity, and self-sacrifice as "true" femininity while casting female sexual agency as something inhuman.
"At its foot a man may sleepâas a man." - Jonathan's final words acknowledge suicide as preferable to vampiric transformation without explicitly embracing it. For a Victorian Christian, self-inflicted death carried profound theological implications, yet Jonathan believes preserving his humanityâand perhaps his soulâwould be preferable to becoming one of Dracula's undead servants. Jonathan's final words echo Hamlet's meditation on death as "sleep," a comparison he has already invited earlier in the novel by quoting the play directly. Throughout his imprisonment, sleep has become a state of profound vulnerability: it is during sleep that he loses time, is moved without his knowledge, and may be subjected to Dracula's predation. His hope that he might "sleepâas a man" therefore expresses a preference for an ordinary human death under God's mercy over the unnatural, violated existence of vampiric undeath.
Dracula's Rejuvenation - Dracula's dramatically renewed appearance invites an unsettling question: whose blood has restored him? Although the novel never confirms it, many readers infer that Jonathan himself has been Dracula's unseen victim, especially in light of the Count's repeated claims that "This man belongs to me," Jonathan's unexplained periods of unconsciousness, and the promise that "To-night is mine." If so, Jonathan is not merely witnessing Dracula's transformationâhe may be looking at his own stolen vitality made visible on the Count's face, reinforcing his desperate resolve to die "as a man" rather than become the monster's food, property, or creation.
If you would like further clarifications or explanations on anything that people said or did in this chapter please leave a reply on this post or send me a message directly, and be sure to say which chapter itâs in!
I have a list, I don't have a trick - using them, reading a lot, listening to the radio (...) is the way. Even natives make mistakes!
Reminder: the indicative mood is used to express facts, certainty, objective reality, and descriptions in most independent statements and questions; the subjunctive mood is used almost exclusively in dependent clauses introduced by que (or equivalent conjunctions) to express subjectivity, doubt, emotion, necessity, or uncertainty.
Douter que (to doubt that) â in negative or interrogative forms only: je ne doute pas quâil vient - I donât doubt that he is coming (but the affirmative douter uses the subjunctive: je doute quâil vienne).
Se douter que (to suspect/be sure that): je me doute qu'il dort encore - I am sure that he's still sleeping (confirmation).
Ătre probable que (to be likely that) - in the affirmative only: il est probable que tu as raison - it is likely that you are correct (but il n'est pas probable que tu puisses y aller, est-il probable qu'elle parte Ă l'heure ?)
Nier que (to deny that) â indicative when the speaker asserts the truth of the denied fact: tu ne peux pas nier quâil a un vrai talent - you canât deny he is truly talented.
Penser/trouver que (to think/find that) â in the affirmative only: je pense quâil a raison - I think he is right (but the negative and the interrogative trigger the subjunctive: je ne pense pas quâil ait raison - I don't think he's right).
Supposer que (to suppose) â when presenting a hypothesis as a fact for argumentâs sake: suppose quâil a raison, que ferais-tu ? - suppose he is right, what would you do? (but for pure hypothesis, subjunctive is possible: supposons quâil ait raison...)
In the case of circumstantial subordinate/adverbial clauses:
that express time: the subjunctive is triggered by jusqu'Ă ce que and avant que exclusively (j'attends jusqu'Ă ce que tu y ailles but je pars dĂšs que tu t'en vas).

[Translation under the cut!]
[door opens + footsteps]
Hmm, what's wrong?
[MC gets out of bed and hugs him]
Awake? Or still asleep?
[Shaw laughs]
What do you mean by asleep but not asleep
My steps were pretty light how could you still hear them
That means you just werenât asleep
[Shaw kisses MC]
Alright, then go on and sleepâŠ
[His cute panic voice]
What are you doing?
Hmm? Sleep with you?
I canât really sleep, but I can lie with you for a bit.
[Shaw lies down and takes a deep breath]
Did you forget? Iâm going to the countryside with the archaeology team tomorrow for half a month.
The bus is at 4 a.m.
I might as well just get through it like this and sleep on the bus later.
There are only a few hours left anyway.
Hmm? Iâll definitely get enough sleep.
The place this time is really remote.
The bus ride will take seven or eight hours.
Thatâs why they said to leave early and avoid the rush.
Once I get on the bus, put on a neck pillow, put on headphones, close my eyes,
and by the time I arrive, I can still have lunch.
Who said I canât sleep because Iâm excited
You think Iâm like you?
Every time I travel, I act like a primary school kid going on a field trip
[MC hits Shaw]
Tch, canât even tell the truth?
Youâre getting more and more pushy
Alright, arenât you going to work tomorrow?
Big-time producer
[in a sweet, low-key pleading voice]
Iâm begging you, just sleep already
[typing sounds + Shaw's breathing]
Hmm? I replied to a message
[Shaw lets out a sigh]
Adam asked to borrow my game account, theyâre playing a five-man team
I told him not to change my key settings
[Shaw yawns]
Hmm? Iâm not sleepy
[in a pouty voice]
Yawning is just a normal physiological reaction
You should be the one closing your eyes and sleeping
[Shaw yawns again]
To freshen up
[Shaw gets of bed + pop one candy into his mouth]
Hmm? Itâs just a mint candy
What are you going to eat, aren't you sleeping?
Copycat
[Clicks his tongue + take out a candy and give it to MC]
Hmm, open your mouth
Yeah, itâs yogurt mint flavor I gave you
This one has a softer taste, not too strong.
Mine?
I think mine is calledâŠ
Flame Mint.
No, you canât have it.
[MC gets handsy + Shaw's cute panic sounds]
Why are you acting spoiled? Do you really have to taste it?
Fine then.
[Shaw kisses her]
Can you taste it?
No?
I did taste the milk flavor in your mouth though.
Itâs pretty obvious.
But I barely tasted the mint.
Let me try again.
No?
[in a dangerous voice]
Thatâs not your call.
[Literally kissed her for 10 seconds straight]
Alright, now your candy is in my mouth.
[MC ambush him]
What are you doing?
[acting innocent]
How am I like that? What did I even do?
Like a primary school kid grabbing candy?
Donât slander primary school kids.
[laughs + in a low seductive voice]
Primary school kids donât even kiss like thatâonly college students do.
[Kiss + MC hits Shaw again]
Then Iâll give the candy back.
[starts teasing her]
Do you want it? Do you want it? Do you want it?
[MC fiercely kiss him + as a result he ended up swallowing the candy]
I accidentally swallowed it, letâs start over.
This time, taste it carefully, hmm?
You pick the flavor.
OrâŠ
Do you want a blind pick?
Then Iâll choose blindly.
[puts a candy in his mouth and starts kissing her]
What do you taste?
Still mint.
I mean, besides mint, what else do you taste?
I was just messing with youâyou actually started thinking about it.
Itâs just pure, additive-free mint candy.
Now even our breath smells like it.
Too cold?
I donât think you feel cold anywhere.
Your mouth is warm, and so is your face.
[his voice dropping an octave đ«Ł]
Even here⊠itâs burning hot.
[delicious kissing sounds + low teasing]Â
I just realized something.
[Kiss]
You also smell like mint body wash, just like me.
Thanks to you and the mint, Iâm completely awake nowâno sleepiness at all.
What about you?
Dodging difficult questions again, are we?
Thatâs fine. Your body already gave me the answer anyway.
It's much more honest than you are.
I can feel it, you know.
It's telling meâŠ
...that you can't bear to let me go.
That you're going to miss me terribly while I'm gone these next few days.
[Kiss]
That's why you refuse to sleep tonight.
So, don't sleep.
[Kiss]
Have another one.
Engrave this taste deep into your memory.
[Kiss]
The ice-cold.
[Kiss]
The burning-hot.
[Kiss]
Remember it for a lifetime.
[endless kissing without stopping]

ASMR Texts (Miss you)
[Section 1]
Shaw: Miss you.
[Section 1.1]
MC: It's been 15 seconds already. Where's the "v50" reply? Did your internet freeze???
[T/N]: "v50" (Væ50) is a famous Chinese internet meme/slang which means "transfer me 50 yuan via WeChat"
Shaw: 111, the connection's fine.
[T/N]: Typing 111 is Chinese internet slang similar to saying: yep, yeah.
Shaw: Can't I tell the truth once in a while?
Shaw: Do I really have to video call you and say it to your face?
[Section 1.2]
MC: !!!! Who took Shaw's phone? Give it back to him right now!
Shaw: âŠâŠ
Shaw: Must be an impostor Shaw.
Shaw: Want to start a video call to verify my identity?
[Section 1.3]
MC: I miss you too =3
Shaw: ...You accepted it that easily?Â
Shaw: Boring.
Shaw: I thought you'd question whether it was really me first.
Shaw: Then we'd have to video call to verify my identity.
â
[Section 2.1]
MC: Can you video call right now?
Shaw: ...Looks like I can't.
Shaw: What a terrible internet connection out here in the countryside.
Shaw: Forget it. Whatever.
[Section 2.2]
MC: No need. Everything you said afterward already proved it's really you.
Shaw: You verified it that quickly?
Shaw: Actually, I was kind of hoping we'd video call so I could see you.
Shaw: But I tried just now. The internet here is terrible. What a pain.
[Section 2.3]
MC: Actually... you could verify it another way~
Shaw: ?
Shaw: I've sent 520 to your Couple Wallet. Got it?
[T/N]: 520 (wÇ Ăšr lĂng) sounds similar to æç±äœ (wÇ Ă i nÇ), meaning "I love you." Because of this, 520 RMB has become a classic romantic amount to send in China. This brat is using money as a way to "verify" that it's really him, since it's something only he would do!
Shaw: Turns out saying something casually can be pretty expensive.
â
[Section 3.1]
MC: Why did you suddenly say you missed me?
Shaw: Do I need to submit an application before I'm allowed to miss you?
Shaw: I just heard someone humming one of your favorite songs.
Shaw: And it suddenly made me think of you.
[Section 3.2]
MC: When are you coming back?
Shaw: Soon.
Shaw: Three or four more days, probably.
Shaw: No, tonight I'm borrowing someone's hotspot if I have to. I'm video calling you no matter what.
[Section 3.3]
MC: Shaw, I miss you.
Shaw: You're sure there isn't some elaborate punchline coming afterward?
Shaw: Then I'll take that as your genuine feelings.
TLDR thailand does not like tumblr so I've had to reconfigure shit and I didn't want to do any of that because I'm lazy at my core but I've finally done it after over a year
