Anakin bounced off of the couch, practically falling over his feet in his sprint to greet Obi-Wan at the door.
“Well?”
“Hello, Anakin,” Obi-Wan sighed, unclipping his saber and setting it on the counter.
“Well?” he repeated.
Obi-Wan regarded him silently for a moment. Then– "Not this time, Padawan.”
“What?!”
“Anakin–”
“You said–”
“No," Obi-Wan said slowly. He shook his head, eyes closed. "I said–”
Anakin slammed his hand down on the counter. Obi-Wan saber rolled off and onto the floor. Both Jedi watched the movement. Anakin’s heavy breathing was the only sound between them.
“You’re angry,” Obi-Wan said quietly. “I understand but–”
“Obviously I’m angry! I got passed over again! How can they expect me to become a good Jedi if I don’t even have a lightsaber?”
“Anakin, there is more to being a Jedi than a lightsaber–”
“Everyone my age has one already.”
“That’s not fair,” Obi-Wan said, shaking his head. “You began at the Temple later than–”
“You lied to me.”
Obi-Wan blinked at him. “I...I did not–”
Anakin stared down Obi-Wan, hard and unflinching. “You promised I’d be chosen. That the Masters said–”
“I was wrong. I’m sorry, they...they changed their mind.”
“Why?” Anakin demanded.
“Why…?”
“Why did they change their mind?”
Obi-Wan rubbed at his temple and took a deep breath. “Anakin. You know–”
“I’ve been working on it!” Anakin cried. “This week, I...I meditated everyday. And when Padawan Drulo called me a baby, I didn’t even touch him.”
“And I’m...proud of you for that,” Obi-Wan said, nodding through a long breath. “But your struggle to mind your emotions is not only centred around your impulse to physically aggravate. It’s more than that, Anakin. We’ve talked about this. I’m sorry–”
“You lied.”
Anakin watched his master’s face shift. Jaw clenched, eyes narrowed. “No. I didn’t. You’re overreacting and this is precisely what the Council–”
“You told me I would be chosen to go to Ilum. You said I was ready. But they didn’t choose me. That’s a lie.”
Obi-Wan huffed in irritation, tugging at the ends of his tunic. “That’s a mistake.”
“You promised,” Anakin shouted, feeling every bit the over-emotional and petulant loner the Jedi thought he was. If they wanted him to be dangerous, than he was more than happy to comply. He hit the counter again, enjoying the pain that shot through his hand.
Obi-Wan watched the motion, then snapped his gaze back to Anakin’s. “Well, that’s what happens when people become adults, okay?” he snapped and moved back toward the door. “They break promises. It happens every day. You’re not special, okay?” He stopped at the door and turned over his shoulder. “Grow up, Anakin.”
