The sad truth about breath files.
A lot of people ask, so I thought I’d explain.
The reason that 1) you can't make a breath file, and 2) nobody can explain to you what you're doing wrong even though their UTAU has a breath file is because it just depends on the microphone. If you try to record one by taking in a breath as if you were about to sing (for best results actually start singing afterwards instead of just gasping for air) and you plug it into UTAU, here's basically how it goes. The program either thinks 'Yeah, that's breathing! Cool, I'll just play it back exactly whenever this plays from now on' or it thinks 'Dude, what? Idk what that was, so I'm gonna try to make it a note? I'll do my best but I'm really not sure what that was...'
Recording it again isn't really going to help. UTAU is extremely fickle with that kind of thing, and it all comes down to what microphone you're using. If you're using a mic that is several hundreds of dollars and UTAU is like 'lol idk' then you're stuck with no breath file. If you're using the default mic on your computer and UTAU is like 'Cool. Oxygen.' Then you get a breath file. Cost or quality of the microphone doesn't matter. If you breath in and UTAU makes a weird screech noise, there is more than likely not going to be a breath file. You're not doing anything wrong, it's the program. Sorry!
