Bonds between Trainers and Pokémon are a two way street.

Onyx and Amethio seem to be quite similar in some aspects, both of them immediately reacting when their opponents look away during battle and pointing it by asking them where they are looking and both valuing honor to some degree (Onyx said before beginning the battle that he'd fight with honor, and Amethio didn't want to use Nyahoja as bargaining chip back in HZ003). They were quite polite to Liko the first time they talked to her too, despite being on opposite sides (Amethio addressed her with honorifics, and Onyx called her ojou-san before asking her to be his opponent). They've both been described as serious too (Onyx by Sango, and Amethio by Friede), and seem focused on their mission.
