Why is PCOS considered an intersex condition and not a dysex condition?

Because it causes variations in the sex hormones. You may be operating under the (incorrect) assumption that the hormone disruptions come from the cysts, which is not the case (and - despite its old name - not all people with PMOS actually get ovarian cysts, nor do all people with PMOS have ovaries.)

PMOS comes from the body - either the endocrine or reproductive system - producing more or less hormones than expected (hypergonadism or hypogonadism.)

Fuck people who say that hyperandrogenism or hypoestrogenism caused by PCOS "isn't intersex"

Fuck people who say that a 'male' with hyperandrogenism isnt intersex, or a 'female' with hyperestrogenism "isn't intersex."

Fuck people who say that the agenital spectrum or people with absent/small/underdeveloped reproductive organs/gonads "aren't intersex."

Fuck people who say that duplicated or extra primary sex traits "aren't intersex."

Fuck people who say that Turner syndrome (or any other chromosomal variation) "isn't intersex."

Anyone with naturally developed genital, reproductive, hormonal, or chromosomal variations is intersex.

Intersex is a sociopolitical identity, not just a diagnosis. Doctors and the community disagree with each other on what it means to be intersex. Doctors are far behind and taught to be intersexist. They are taught to diagnose any sex variation as a disorder, deformity, or defect, rather than diagnosing it as "intersex."

So I have an OC who’s intersex but I don’t really know what variation he has, and I’m honestly terrified to do research because of how few spots on the internet treat intersex people like, y’know, people

All I know is that the character was raised male and has an imbalance in hormones, leaning more toward estrogen and the like, along with ambiguous genitalia

Are these traits that can mix and what are the terms for each?

These are traits that can be mixed, and the term you might be looking for is "Hypoandrogenism [link]", (which happens due to hypogonadism [link] due to a variety of variations such as De La Chapelle Syndrome [link], Klinefelter Syndrome [link], aromatase excess syndrome [link] and many more [link])which can cause plenty of traits on the ambiguous genitalia [link] and agenitalia [link] spectrums!

Flags for mesoestrogenism and mesoandrogenism based on @isobug's hormonal intersex flags.

Meso = in the middle of, as in between hypo and hyper. I think a "midandro/estrogenism" term was coined before but meso makes more linguistic sense to me ehehe. The general term would be Mesogonadism!

Definition

Intended for intersex people who would have for example, hyperestrogenism by male standards but hypoestrogenism by female standards, depending on what they're interpreted as by doctors. Many variations don't fit into the "more male or more female" scheme that's usually used during diagnoses and discussions by medical professionals.

BUT this can be used by any intersex person who's hormone levels are between typical male and female ranges, or between what's viewed as "normal" or "high" for their assigned sex.

The format is from the general hyper/hypo-hormonal flags. I put the red for hyper and blue for hypo as the first and last stripes, representing being in between the two. Orange represents androgens, teal estrogens. I recolored the molecule symbol to purple, because its between red & blue and also to keep the meaning of the purple stripes in the originals.
