If it wasn’t clear already by the number of posts I’ve made about it, my favorite laptop ever is my Toshiba Satellite P25-S507. However, even as my favorite it has one inherent design flaw which really can be a pain, but demonstrates the mindset of early 00′s laptop designers. They omitted an RS232 port! There are no serial ports on this machine. You get 4 USB ports, and even a parallel port. But serial? Get fucked, kiddos!
So I finally did something about it, and installed an RS232 PCMCIA adapter. I hadn’t used the PCMCIA slots in a few years (the last time was for a secondary network adapter for some unique network daisy-chaining). Tonight was the first test, and it passed with flying colors. Hyperterminal finally has a purpose on this machine and I couldn’t be happier.
After using various flavors and eras of Windows, without necessarily having all my machines networked at the same time, or using floppy disks, or allowing for USB drives, there’s one thing that l can always rely on to get shit done and to solve file transfer problems.
