Summary: Puffer swore he wasnât nervousâokay, maybe a littleâabout bringing his hyper girlfriend to meet Grizzy, Droid, and Pezzy. She already knew about their YouTube chaos, but knowing and surviving it in person were two very different things.
Chris had been pacing the living room for the past ten minutes, controller in hand, not playing but fidgeting with the buttons. You sprawled out on his couch, legs tucked beneath you, watching him with an amused smile that only made him more restless.
âYou know,â you said, drawing out the words like you were narrating a documentary, âI think I just discovered your nervous tic. Itâs pacing. You look like a Sims character whose path got blocked.â
Chris groaned. âI am not pacing like a Sim.â
âYes, you are. All you need is the little diamond above your head.â You sat up straight, hand darting into the air like you were placing an invisible green plumbob above him. âThere. Perfect.â
Chris finally dropped the controller onto the coffee table with a sigh. âI justâokay, I want tonight to go well. The guys mean a lot to me, and you mean a lot to me and this is the first time youâre all hanging out in person.â
âYouâve told me,â you teased, hopping up from the couch and bounding over to him with your usual boundless energy. You tugged at the hem of his hoodie before smoothing it back down again, almost as if fussing with him could erase his nerves. âAbout twelve times, actually. âI want tonight to go well, babe.â âDonât be too weird, babe.â âPlease donât roast Droid too hard, babe.ââ You said in a fake deep voice, doing your best to mimic Chrisâ voice.
Chris tried not to smile. Tried. Failed. âI didnât say it like that.â
You grinned. âYou totally did. But heyârelax, okay? If your friends are anything like you, Iâll be fine. And if theyâre worse, wellâŚâ She poked his chest playfully. âGood thing I come with unlimited energy and zero shame.â
That, at least, was true.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You two pulled up to Nelsonâs house twenty minutes later. Chris felt his stomach flip with nerves again, but you were practically bouncing out of the passenger seat before the car was even fully parked.
You always enjoyed meeting new people. And thatâs exactly how you viewed this, youâre just meeting new friends.
You hooked your arm through his as you both walked up, practically dragging him toward the door like he was the one being introduced, not you.
Nelson answered before Chris could even knock. âPuffer! Yo, whatâs up, man?â He said loudly and pulled him into one of those back-patting guy hugs.
You never really got why guys did that? âJust hug normally you weirdosâ you thought to yourself, snickering at your incredible humor in your own mind.
Nelson then looked past him. âOhhh, so this is the famous girlfriend. We finally meet.â
âFamous?â You repeated with a laugh. âYou make me sound like a cryptid. Real mothman type shit.â
Nelson blinked at you, then barked out a laugh. âOkay, yeah, I like her already.â
From inside the house came a distant voiceâMaxâsâyelling, âIs she here yet? Tell her to run while she can! She can still save herself!!â
âToo late!â You shouted back instantly, cupping your hands around your mouth to project like a megaphone. âIâm not stuck with you! Youâre stuck with me now!â
Chris groaned. âGod, I knew this was a mistake.â
âBig mistake,â Jaimeâs voice chimed as he appeared from the kitchen with a can of soda. He raised a brow at her like he was sizing her up. âSo this is the girl who willingly dates Puffer. Thatâs⌠suspicious.â
You gasped dramatically, grabbing Chrisâs arm. âSuspicious? Oh no. He figured me out. Guess Iâll have to pack up and go home.â
Jaime held his hands up in mock surrender smirked. âShit..Donât let me stop you.â
âNope,â Nelson interrupted, clapping his hands. âShe stays. I want to see how long it takes for her to roast all of us.â
âTwo minutes, tops,â Max said, finally strolling in from the living room. He had a sly grin on his face like he was ready for a showdown. âShe looks like sheâs got the energy of five toddlers on Capri Suns.â
You gasped againâthough this one was playful, not offended. âRude. Six toddlers, minimum. Get it right.â
That earned you a chorus of laughter from the guys, and Chris felt his shoulders drop a fraction. Maybe this would go okay after all.
The night settled into its usual chaotic rhythm. Nelson set up Mario Kart on the big TV while Jaime and Max argued over snacks in the kitchen. You made yourself at home instantly, flopping onto the couch between Chris and Nelson like youâd been part of the group for years.
âSo,â you said, controller in hand, âon a scale of one to ten, how salty do you all get when you lose?â
âDepends who wins,â Jaime answered.
âTen,â Max cut in.
âTwenty,â Nelson corrected, smirking.
âForty-two,â Chris muttered, already bracing himself.
âPerfect,â You said with a mischievous grin. âCanât wait to crush you all.â
Chris leaned closer, voice low so only she could hear. âBabe, maybe donât taunt them before the game even startsââ
Too late. Youâd already selected Yoshi with the confidence of someone walking into battle.
The first race was chaos incarnate.
You laughed so loudly at every green shell hit that even Nelson had to pause to wheeze. Max swore under his breath every time you zipped past him, while Jaime kept groaning and complaining that his controller was broken.
By the third race, you were in first place, and Nelson threw his head back with a groan. âNah, this shit rigged. No way youâre this good.â
âItâs not rigged,â you said sweetly, eyes glued to the screen. âIâm just better.â
Chris couldnât help itâhe laughed. Loud, unrestrained, and so full of pride it surprised him. Because of course you fit right in.
You werenât intimidated, you werenât holding back your energy. You werenât putting on a persona. You were being exactly herself, and the guys were eating it up.
Hours later, the coffee table was littered with empty soda cans and chip bags, the TV still glowing with the Mario Kart scoreboard. The guys were arguing over some dumb in-game shortcut, voices overlapping in a chaotic symphony.
Chris sat back, watching you animatedly explain your âsuperior strategyâ to Nelson, who looked half-convinced and half-annoyed. Jaime was leaning against the wall, shaking his head with a grin, while Max had his head in his hands like heâd just witnessed a tragedy.
It kinda reminded Chris of the âShe came down in a bubble, dawg!â meme.
You caught Chrisâs gaze across the room and shot him a playful wink. That one little gesture was enough to make warmth bloom in his chest.
Eventually, the chaos mellowed. Nelson and Jaime ended up in a heated debate about controller brands, and Max started scrolling on his phone. You drifted back over to Chris on the couch, curling up beside him without hesitation.
âYou okay?â You asked softly, voice dipping for the first time all night. You knew your boy. Occasionally, he would get overwhelmed or his battery would drain to fast and he would have to sit and zone out a bit to recharge.
Chris nodded, pressing his cheek against your hair. âYeah. More than okay. You⌠you were amazing tonight.â
You smiled, tilting your head up to look at him with your pretty eyes. âTold you Iâd be just fine.â
âI know, I justââ He paused, words catching on the lump in his throat. âI really like having you here. With them. With me.â
Your grin softened into something warmer, gentler. You reached up to cup his jaw, thumb brushing against his cheek. âI like being here. Thanks for sharing your little world with me, Chris.â
Chris felt something in his chest loosen, like heâd been holding his breath all night without realizing. He pressed a quick kiss to your forehead, letting the noise of his friends fade into the background.
You fit. You fit perfectly.
And he couldnât wait for every night after this one.
