Own animator Research: Hyebin Lee
Hyebin Leeis a London-based illustrator and animator originally from Seoul, South Korea. Multiple films created by Hyebin have been shown in many different festivals all over the world. She made a short 7 minute animation called “Cherry on the Cake” about a little girl on her birthday getting smaller and smaller to reflect who she feels, as her parents fail to realise what day it is. This short film won awards at the Chicago, Shanghai, Seattle, and Encounters International Film Festivals. It also won an award at the Royal Television Society for Best Postgraduate Animation nominee.
Hyebin has made many successful short films and she has also worked as a designer for children’s books, a journalist, and an illustrator for weekly newspapers and magazines in Korea. Her representative is Casarotto Ramsay & Associates for television and film.
Hyebin was educated at Sookmyung Women’s University in Seoul Korea where she studied for a BA in Visual Design. She then went on to Kingston University in London studying for an MA in Illustration and then to the National Film and Television School to study for an MA in Animation Direction.
She was selected to make short animations for the British Humanist Association. The films were written and produced by the BHA and Stephen Fry narrated them. Hyebin was the animator and director. The clips are about 2-3 minutes long and provide a simplistic visual for the narration over the top. The videos are called “What makes something right or wrong?” and “What should we think about death?” for the “That’s Humanism!” series. The animations are very quirky and they both feature characters that are a bit of a twist on stick people. The animations are duo tone and the characters are drawn in black and red The nose and lips being the only elements of red.
