With the 2016 UAW-GM Spirit of Detroit HydroFest now behind us, why not take a look back at past races on the river.  The Detroit Historical Society’s Online Collection is home to a massive--and still growing--collection of photos, slides, and negatives of past races.

This particular shot from the 1965 Spirit of Detroit Race catches the BLUE CHIP, driven by Fred Alter, in the foreground, and the MISS BUDWEISER, driven by Chuck Hickling, in the background.  Although they appear to be neck-and-neck in this photo, ultimately the BLUE CHIP placed fifth, while the BUDWEISER finished eighth that year.
