^^ Could this really happen? â Tonightâs Hydrangea Dream Galaxy
âHydrangea Saladâ
Itâs Monday lunch break. The four of us have gathered in the break room next to the office as usual.
âWhoa, Minamin, what on earth is that?â
âUm⊠Hydrangea salad.â
âWaitâ hydrangea? Like the ones that bloom at shrines?â âYep, shrine hydrangeas. Thereâs an edible cultivar, apparently. I found it at that fancy organicâselect shop where our O-chic Section Chief buys groceries. First time Iâd seen it, so I had to try.â
Lucky-senpaiâher last name is Yotsuba, so everyone calls her Luckyâleans closer, face half curious, half alarmed. âSo why the shrineâonly specification?â she asks. You said âshrineâ first, I think, but say aloud, âAhâsorry, I mean the kind that often bloom at shrines.â
Inside the clear pack are pale blue-green petals, about the size of one of those help-yourself peanut-butter jars at a trendy supermarket.
Miya-san, two years my senior, squints. âTheyâre so pretty⊠almost too pretty to eat, arenât they?â
âTrue, but theyâre gorgeous, so I figured Iâd post #HydrangeaSalad on Insta.â
Akari-senpai pipes up. âPut the caption âSalad Anniversaryâ. Total classicâpeople will love it.â
âAkari-chaaaan, Minamin has no idea what âSalad Anniversaryâ is,â Lucky-senpai laughs.
âOhâright. Okay, just âHydrangea Saladâ then. Anyway, let me taste it!â
Before I can answer, Lucky-senpaiâthe oldestâsnatches a blossom and munches it. Akari-senpai and Miya-san dive in right after.
âH-hey, thatâs my lunch!â I yelp. All thatâs left in the pack, apart from a few lettuce leaves, is a single lonely floret.
âItâs like we all chipped in to buy it!â Lucky-senpai grins. âIâll grab you another tomorrow, promise,â says Miya-san. âBut this definitely goes down as âThe Day Minamin Didnât Get Her Saladâ,â Lucky and Akari declare in unison.
âUgh, and I didnât even get a photoâseriously, the âHydrangea Salad I Never Got to Eatâ Anniversary!â Akari-senpai groans. ââŠWhich makes this a âSalad AnniversaryâAlmostâ,â I add.
We all burst into laughter.
