Patton shifted uncomfortably, the restraints irritating his skin where they rubbed along. Large leather straps kept him tied to the floor. It wasnât the most pleasant way to way up, heâd admit. All he could remember was feeling a sharp pain as something pricked his neck, and then Patton passed out. How long had he been out? It could have been a few days for all he knew. The Giant looked around to try and gauge some sort of understanding from his surroundings. There was an unnatural light shining above him, and rounded metal formed a dome all around him.
Pattonâs eyes widened in realization. He was inside one of those human structures. But how?
âAHA!â Hearing a sound, Patton turned his head to the side, watching as a human came out on what appeared to be a shaky metal bridge. The man waltzed out, looking quite pleased to see Patton awake. âI canât believe I finally got you, how incredible is that? Youâve been causing a lot of trouble out there in Area 51, and I will be having none of it you rapscallion! What have you to say for yourself?â
âWoah, youâre so small.â Patton gasped. He had never seen a human this close before. The human looked up, meeting his gaze. If Patton squinted, he thought the manâs cheeks had turned a bit red. Aw, was he embarrassed?
âI...what?â The human was clearly caught off guard, straightening his long white jacket.
âI never thought humans were this small.â Patton rambled on. âWhatâs it like?â
âAhâŚâ
âI think itâd be really neat.â Patton gushed. âIâve always wanted to be smaller. I think then I could make more friends because my size scares lots of animals away. Although if I lay down on the ground, I can sometimes pretend Iâm small too.â
The human looked increasingly perplexed at Pattonâs statements. Patton giggled at his confused expression, deciding this one was cute as he was tiny.
âWeâre getting off track.â The scientist shook his head. He looked down at his clipboard. âIâve just got a few questions for you, and I expect prompt answers. No funny business.â
âOkay!â Patton said cheerfully. âAlthough, um, I do have a couple questions for you first. Who are you? Where am I? Whatâs going on, exactly?â
ââŚmy name is Roman.â Roman raised an eyebrow as he took a look at the giant. âBut I donât think you understand how this is supposed to work.â
âWhy?â Patton tilted his head.
âThis isnât really a conversation, more of an interrogation.â Roman cleared his throat, putting his hands behind his back. âNow, where have you-â
âOoooh, is that why Iâm tied down?â Patton interrupted, wiggled against the restraints for emphasis.
âUm, yes, theyâre for ah...safety.â Roman paled significantly, watching as they both heard the leather begin to rip as Patton flexed lightly, testing the strength of the material. Apparently, not that strong.Â
âSafety?â Patton frowned, deciding to stop now that they were loose enough for his liking. After all, there was no reason to break the restraints, especially when Roman seemed attached to them.
âOh sweet odinâs eyepatch youâre strong.â Roman seemed less sure of himself, taking a step back from the edge. âLook, I donât know what thinking, but- stay back!â Roman tripped over himself trying to get back, letting out a yelp.
âOh! Oh, youâre hurt. Here, let me help you.â Quickly Patton sat up, no longer holding himself back as he ripped through the leather with ease. Immediately Roman began to bolt for the door, tugging on the handle.
âOh, come now, donât be difficult lilâ guy.â Patton reached out, putting his hand on the door so Roman couldnât leave. The scientist let out a gasp, the platform shaking as Patton scooted closer. His arm bumped the bridge, the structure creaking under his weight. Roman began to slide towards the side and Patton let out a yelp, quickly cupping his hands beneath the edge to catch the human before he could fall.
âPhew! That would have been quite the fall! Good thing I caught you.â Patton brought Roman closer to his face, worry lines appearing on his forehead. âAre you alright?â
âDonât touch me!â Roman flinched when Patton brushed his thumb against the humanâs side. âPut me down. Now.â
Patton paused, looking down at the scientist in his hands with newfound interest. He had never held a human before. They were even lighter than he imagined, and he found he didnât really want to put Roman down. The human was just too cute and cuddly.
âNot yet.â Patton said, lifting Roman even higher. Suddenly, Roman grabbed onto his thumb, and Pattonâs heart nearly melted. Following the humanâs gaze, Patton looked down at the ground. âAww, are you afraid of heights?â
âThatâs not what Iâm afraid of!â Roman cried out through gritted teeth, his eyes clenched shut.
âOh, sorry.â Patton did feel a bit sheepish, seeing how lifting up the human had scared him so. He adjusted to lay down, holding Roman closer to the ground. âThere, you can open your eyes now, youâre lower.â
âNo!â Roman retorted, keeping his eyes closed. âIâm not a brave hero, I refuse to face my demise with dignity!â
âCome ooooooon.â Patton blew gently, teasingly, in Romanâs face, but this only made Roman flinch again. âShow me those pretty little eyes again. Please?â
The human just shook his head frantically. Patton leaned closer, trying to get a peek. This close he could see his breath rustling the little hairs on Romanâs head. This close, Patton could tell the human didnât seem to be having as much fun. In fact, the tiniest of tears seemed to be collecting in the creases of Romanâs closed eyelids.
âoh hey now kiddo, donât cry.â Patton stuck out his lip, getting a bit upset himself in sympathy. He reached up with his fingers, petting the scientist in what he hoped was a comforting manner, but it just caused him to let out a choked sob. He hadnât realized just how freaked out the tiny must be of heights. That is, until he heard the smallest, quietest little plea.
âPlease donât eat me.â
Oh. Oh. âOh, hey, no no no, Iâm not going to eat you!â Pattonâs expression turned a bit horrified. Is that what people thought of giants nowadays? No wonder people always ran away from him, and no wonder Roman had gotten so scared all of a sudden. Now Patton felt bad.
âOkay, okay, Iâll set you down, alright?â Patton gently let Roman down on the ground, allowing the human to stand on his own two feet but Patton kept his hands close just in case.
Roman slowly opened his eyes, looking up at Patton wearily. Patton laid down on his stomach, folding his arms in front of him and resting his chin on them. Patton gave the human a gentle smile. âSee? Youâre okay, no need to freak, little guy.â
âI didnât freak out.â Roman argued, quickly wiping at his face. âI was⌠testing your⌠sympathy. Yeah, sure, that sounds scientific enough.â
âWhatever you say.â Patton agreed. Roman seemed to gauge his expression carefully.
âSo, youâre really not going to eat me?â Roman asked, seeming both hopeful and confused. âWhat kind of giant are you?â
âThe good kind. Besides-â Patton said, getting a teasing glint in his eye as he reached out to boop Roman on the nose, nearly knocking the human over in the process. âYouâre too cute to eat.â
