Hummingbird Hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum)

This moth looks remarkably similar to a hummingbird and is a great example of convergent evolution. Hummingbird hawk-moths emit a humming sound and use their unusually long proboscis to feed on pollen and suck up moisture while they hover over flowers. Like other proboscises, these are actually two tubes held together by hooks, which the moth can separate for cleaning. They particularly enjoy flying in bright, sunny weather but they will also fly at other times, including in the rain.
