This hummingbird hawk moth is Lucian. Their body and wings are 100% silk. I forgot how much I loved painting silk. The brush just glides over it🧡

#BucketList I never thought I would see one of these in person, let alone a small field of them, so this made my top-10 insect encounters list.
Apparently hummingbird moths are widespread in North America, and regionally can be somewhat common, but not for this city slicker. From a distance at first glance it had me fooled – I did think it was a tiny hummingbird for a split second. Amazing how this moth even has a tail that opens like a fan when hovering in the air, just like hummingbirds do. I’m not sure if their looks mimic hummingbirds intentionally as some sort of defense or if it’s simply parallel evolution, but whatever the case, it was a real treat getting up close to this unusual moth on my excursion up North.
Interesting side note about this footage: The moth’s wingbeats synced with the video’s frame rate so that the moth appears as if it’s floating on its tip-toes and slowly flapping its wings, but in actuality the wings were beating so fast they were a blur just like a hummingbird. They made the same buzzing sound as a hummingbird too, only on a smaller/quieter scale (just barely audible in the video)
"The First Chirp - LIGO Hanford, 2015" 🐦 My artistic rendition of the first gravity wave detection (GW150914) at LIGO. On September 14th, 2015 LIGO detected the merger of a pair of black holes. As two black holes dance around each other, spiraling closer and closer to their final merger - the frequency of the gravity waves increases and the resulting sound is like a bird's chirp. I think it also looks like a bird, a hummingbird to be precise. #scienceiscool #physicslab #hummingbirdmoth #physicslovers #fineart #sciencemuseum #hummingbirdart #hummingbird_spot #particlephysics #artistsoninstagram #blackhole #artoftheday #physicsisfun #LIGO #scienceteacher #heart #neutronstar #contemporaryartists #modernartists #gravitywave #hummingbirdrotary #nerdart #pasteldrawing #contemporaryart #chirp #scienceart #drawingart #hummingbirdlover #astrophysics #drawingsketch www.hannahcrazyhawk.com (at Eugene, Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGvqmoXFvFM/?igshid=41i5x59wwrbl
