Blood in the Water Pets [segment]
"I'm human." The Boss said precisely once and seemed proud of it.
But the older boy can use magic so maybe he's mixed like Ton thinks and maybe he just favors the human half of his heritage more than the sorcerer half. Which makes sense, Saji does not think that the Boss likes sorcerers much at all. well, doesn't like them as much other than food that is. Saji watches the way that the Boss is distant from them only really interacting when he wants something. Looking through them like they aren't people at all but some kind of weird bugs. It gives Saji the willies.
Unfortunately, Saji can't bring himself to try and get the group to leave. With the Boss around their lives are better than they have been⌠ever. Certainly the best few months they've had in years. They have enough money to eat every day, sometimes multiple times a day. They can pay for a room at motels and take showers and have a bed to sleep on. It's so much better than having to sleep on the streets. With the Boss around they don't have to constantly look over their shoulder worried about getting snatched and sold or experimented on. It wasn't even this safe or this good at the orphanage before Saji'd been kicked out for being too old and useless.
The others have all sorts of theories about why the Boss hunts elite sorcerers and given that the Boss never explains anything about himself or his intentions⌠none of the theories have been contradicted. But the rest of the guys are young, [years younger than Saji and he winces at that, he's surrounded by babies with no one he can go to for helpâŚ] and they might be a bit naive. Or at least a bit too optimistic.
Saji thinks that the Boss might actually be a monster of some kind.
He doesn't know much about humans but he's pretty sure that that normal humans don't crack open at the base of their neck or on their chest in their sleep where black goo leaks out. Sometimes with weird tubes peaking out as well. Whatever the 'Gwon' thing is that the Boss does⌠it's not magic either. At least not any kind of magic he's ever heard of or seen before. There's no smoke at all, just a deep sound that seems to come from deep in the Boss's gut whenever he's too close to the older boy when he does it. [If Ton calls it a fart one more time, Saji's gonna make Ton join his and Ushishimada's daily jogs.]
Also the Boss eats people.
Saji feels like everyone glossed over the Boss openly being a cannibal way too quickly. Like.. it's not even normal cannibalism. He's not using magic to transform someone into something more palatable. He's not using magic to turn himself into some kind of beast before doing it. He's not even cooking the meat or using seasonings. JustâŚraw.
