Filters will never be perfect, but they’re important, because AI can be racist.

in this case, it was racist. and the filters missed it and it got posted. This is inexcusable, especially in times like these. The post in question was of course immediately deleted, because while it’s important to show how AI can be dangerously wrong, this is not the time or the place for that kind of thing. Not in an automated, unmoderated fashion.

it's very important for me to keep anything disgusting (racist/sexist/homophobic/transphobic etc) off of picdescbot, so when I open the bot for submissions it's moderated, not automatic. I have to manually approve every single post.

Also, due to the volume of submissions the bot gets, we can't publish all of them, so I filter out photos with "boring" descriptions.

Last time, I got so many cute selfies and it felt so bad to not publish any of them because the caption was always "a photo of a person" and while selfies are nice, flooding all of the bot's followers with very similar content is not.

so in short, the reason the bot is not open to submissions 24/7 is that moderating them would be a full time job, and a very exhuausting one at that.

Thanks for participating in the surprise submission event. You may have noticed that the bot hasn’t posted most stuff you submitted. that’s because the code to process the submissions has rotted since the last time we used it, and I’ve spent the past hour-and-a-half trying to clean it up, shoving all the digital dust under the metaphorical digital rug, removing all the mold and geting it working again... with no luck so far.

I’m still trying to fix it, but it seems that it will take a while, so I’m closing the submission box.

If I manage to get this code working (and if upcoming real life events will leave me with enough free time and energy for this) expect a bigger submission event on the last week of August.
