Chapter 15
reader pov
You woke up, not expecting much.
Maybe you'd have a croissant for breakfast.
Maybe you'd finally decide how to decorate your dorm for Halloween in a few weeks.
You certainly didn't expect to find Mattheo Riddle standing outside of your dorm when you pulled it open.
He looked up the second the door swung open.
"Oh."
He stood a little straighter.
"Morning."
You didn't even get the chance to reply before he started talking again.
"I was wondering if... um... do you want to go to breakfast with me?"
You just blinked at him, mouth hanging open. He had somehow hijacked the Hufflepuff password and somehow made it up the stairs to the girls' dormitories without being tossed back down.
"Yeah—"
But he began talking again, and he didn't even hear you talk. You stared at him again, eyebrows raised.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" He asked, trailing off mid-rant about the soup always being cold and how they shouldn't bother serving it.
"I said yes."
His eyes widened. "Okay, brilliant. Let's go!" He all but ran down the stairs. They still didn't turn into a slide.
"How did you get in here anyway?" You asked as you both made your way into the corridors, ignoring the looks from others.
He furrowed his brows.
"Walked."
"No, Mattheo."
He looked around and over his shoulder at the hidden door behind him.
"The Fat Friar let me in."
Your eyes widened. "He what?"
"Said I looked harmless."
"You tripped a first-year the other day. On purpose!"
"Yeah! But not today."
You couldn't help but smile, shaking your head in disbelief at his logic.
He really was funny.
When you arrive at the great hall, you both part ways to your own tables.
You felt the stares of probably half the students in the room following you as you walked towards the Hufflepuff table. Even the teachers were watching.
Specifically Professor McGonagall.
When you looked back at her, she had her eyes narrowed but a smirk on her face, and she was gently nudging the headmaster, who immediately shook his head.
Weird.
You felt another pair of eyes burning through the back of your head.
It was a familiar feeling that you had known for 7 years.
But now, it didn't feel intimidating.
You whipped around to face Mattheo at his own table.
He was craning his neck to look over the top of Draco's head, who was blocking his view of you.
When he noticed you looking at him, he shot an embarrassed smile your way and went back to talking to Theo like nothing had happened.
A few moments later, you turned again, and he was watching.
Again.
This time, Draco seemed to become very annoyed at the fact Mattheo kept leaning over his food and shoved the boy away from him.
"Eat your sandwich!" He yelled and you giggled quietly. You had never heard Draco yell like that before. He sounded exhausted.
Mattheo only glared at his friend and sat back in a huff.
You turned back to your own meal, only to see Eliana sobbing into one of her friend's shoulders.Your smile faded.
She had lied.
Manipulated you.
She had made you believe you weren't good enough.
But seeing someone cry still made something ache in your chest.
You looked back down at your soup.
While taking small spoonfuls of your soup, you didn't notice Marcy walk over to you, nor did you notice her sit down opposite of you.
You only looked up when she waved a hand in front of your face.
"Oh! Marcy, hi."
"Finally!" she laughed. "I thought you'd gone deaf."
You grimaced and said, "Sorry."
"You're fine," she shrugged, leaning across the table and lowering her voice. "I think you've broken Riddle."
You frowned.
"...What?"
"He smiled."
"As one does?"
Marcy snorted, "Not like that. Usually it's some creepy "I'm going to hex you and it's going to hurt" smile.
She tried to imitate him but ended up looking very silly, and you couldn't help but laugh.
"No, seriously," she continued, "He's... different. See! He keeps looking over here!"
She pointed right at the table, and before you even got to turn around, you heard the loud laughter of his friends.
Just before lunch, you had charms.
Of course, you shared that class with Slytherin, which meant Mattheo would likely be there if he didn't skip.
For some odd reason, you hoped that he wouldn't.
Luckily for you, Mattheo was standing near the back of the classroom, deep in conversation with Theo.
As you pulled out your seat from under the desk, it scraped against the hard floors, which made Mattheo's head look your way.
He shot you a wide smile and made his way to the seat in front of yours and threw his bag onto the floor before turning around, resting his chin on his arms as they settled on the back of the chair.
"Have a nice morning, Petal?"
You nodded. "Mhm. I got an 'O' on my hippogriff essay I did over the summer for Care of Magical Creatures. Hagrid loved it."
You both laughed quietly when Draco physically shivered a few seats away at the mention of hippogriffs.
"Hey." Mattheo spoke up after a few moments of silence. "Whatever happened to that clip thing you wore a few weeks ago? The ladybug one."
You thought back to the last time you had worn it. Mattheo had fixed it for you, which was extremely out of the blue. But he had a good point: Where did the clip go? You really did like that one.
"Dunno," you shrugged. "Haven't seen it since last month. It'll be in my dorm somewhere."
That was probably true. You had a habit of misplacing things even in your own space—you really did have to clean your room soon before the house elves had a fit.
"Oh. Where did you get it?"
You raised an eyebrow. "Hogsmeade, I think. It was a small shop."
"Right." He nodded like he was taking a mental note.
"Why?"
"Nothing." He shrugged quickly. "Just wondering."
"Settle down!" Professor Flitwick announced as he stepped up onto his stack of books, "Today, we are revising summoning charms because it seems that over the summer you have all lost the ability to perform simple magic."
The class groaned as everyone reached for their textbooks, muttering about how pointless the lesson was.
Accio was easy.
Or at least it was supposed to be.
Every time you tried to summon your quill from mere inches across the desk, it only vibrated slightly before settling back down.
After nearly five minutes of struggling, a hand waved in front of your face.
You looked up.
Mattheo.
"You're flicking your wrist too hard," he murmured. "Relax it a bit."
You tilted your head at the quill.
Taking a small breath, you copied the movement he'd shown you.
"Accio."
The quill shot straight into your hand. You looked back up at him with a small smile.
"Thank you," you whispered.
He only shrugged.
"Told you."
You smiled and gave your attention to the parchment you were writing on.
Mattheo cleared his throat.
"So, uh... about that clip. Are you going to buy a new one?"
You blinked. "Maybe. I probably won't find it until my dorm gets emptied at the end of the year. Why?"
"I'm going to Hogsmeade tomorrow. Saturday and all. You could walk up with me." He shrugged. "Only if you want, that is."
You smiled, a proper one. "Sure. What are you going in for?"
He looked away. "Just... ink, I guess."
A beat.
"Maybe Honeydukes."
He looked back at you. "I've not really thought that far."
You both chuckled.
You sighed and looked at your textbook.
Hogsmeade.
With Mattheo.
It was a very strange thought.
Not even a month ago you would've crossed corridors to avoid him.
You startled when Professor Flitwick clapped his hands together at the front of the room.
"Eyes forward, everyone!"
Mattheo glanced back at you and rolled his eyes dramatically before turning back to his own work.
You smiled.
The rest of the lesson passed in a blur. Quills flew around the classroom; textbooks floated through the air. Flitwick would let out a squeaky, exasperated sigh as yet another object was launched across the room—sometimes on purpose, sometimes not.
You thanked the heavens that Seamus Finnigan wasn't in this class.
Despite the chaos, you sat quietly, scribbling away at your parchment, alone with your thoughts.
For the first time in a long time...
You found yourself looking forward to something.
Tomorrow.
