In light of how marriage (gay marriage specifically) was shown in the current season of Voltron I though I’d share the best compliment my husband ever gave me. We will have been married 18 years next February.
About five years after we got married my husband turns to me in the car. We were driving who knows where now.
He says: Sweetie, thank you for marrying me.
Me: Looking at him a little oddly. Your welcome, where did that come from?
Him: Well you didn’t need to marry me. You were already complete without me. You had your life together, you had your future planned out. You didn’t need me.
Me: Tears flowing freely from my eyes as I look for a place to pull over (of course I was driving when he hit me with that). Thank you. I love you honey, of course I wanted to marry you. I wanted you in my life.
Seeing such a joke made of a marriage in such a popular show was heartbreaking. I do hope nobody thinks they need marriage or a partner to be happy and complete. I hope nobody thinks they have to change their entire personality to make your partner happy. Please realize you do not have to give up your dreams to get married.
Find someone who supports all of those things, who likes you for what you already are and wants you to achieve your dream. Who supports your choices and will catch you when you fall. And find a person who you want to do the same thing for.
My husband moved across the country with me and our entire family just so I could chase my dreams. That’s a real relationship. Loving the person for who they are, inside and out.
And don’t get me started on trying to hide a gay marriage in an epilogue, with a random person, where they can feasibly deny it. For choosing to not show it in the same light as a heetro relationship. For not showing it to be as deep and as meaningful as a hetro relationship. For Shame on them.
