Why today and not any other day....
You might ask why today and not any other day did you decide to start your blog? I think its been coming for a while. I am on maternity leave, enjoying spending time with my son but my mind is busy. I am preparing to return to work and this brings certain thoughts and feelings that I am trying to manage and I am also preparing to be made redundant in September and I am busy trying to explore what to do afterwards.
I am in an unusual situation where I have been preparing for my redundancy since I took the job in July 2009. It is a great position to be in, it gives you the opportunity to really think about what you want to do afterwards. It has become slightly harder having to choose from the options having become a mother, but the one thing I know is that I want to work.
I went for an informal interview today with one of the top consulting firms. I enjoyed preparing for this interview, researching on the internet and having the opportunity to think. As agreed by both myself and the gentleman that interviewed me, the role that they are currently trying to fill is probably not what I am looking for but the process made me realise was two things; one was that I know what I really want to do and I either need to find an organisation that wants this or I need to go it alone and secondly, in preparing for this interview I was astounded to see how many blogs there are out there written by HR professionals and I thought why not have a go, it might just help me achieve my goal.
What is it that I have decided I want to do? I want to become an HR thought leader. I want to really contribute to the future of HR in organisations, I am passionate that HR be seen as a function that actively contributes to the success of an organisation.
A few months ago I thought one option could be to do a PhD. I wanted to research into how HR can add value to an organisation, but I wanted this research to have real commercial value and from the findings be able to develop solutions, tools and approaches that an organisation could implement. Apparently commercial value and PhD's don't mix, I would love to lecture to undergraduates and share my experience with them but apparently academia didn't value my ten plus years experience in HR and having read many academic texts and having to reread and reread them to understand the content, I concluded that this wasn't a route I wanted to take at this moment in time.
So this is the start to my 'commercial' journey to become an HR Thought Leader...wish me luck....
