Isabelle sat in the front row of the church pews but the ceremony proceeding around her simply didn’t exist. She felt numb to everything, even the comforting touch of those next to her. On some level it was clear to her that they were attempting to consolidate her but she couldn’t find it in herself to conjure up any emotion with which to reciprocate. The only thing she could find within herself was a void which had swallowed anything else she might as been able to feel before.

Mute, Isabelle could not bring herself to give the grieving crowd a speech when the announcer asked for one. She simply couldn’t find the words to describe the unimaginable pain and infinite loneliness she felt in all the moments that followed her cousin’s death.

The fire had taken more than it’s fair share of their family and the survivors had sewn themselves together again with hope and revenge; they’d felt a reason to go on. Isabelle didn’t feel that any longer, she felt the void. Her family used to say loosing a member of the pack was like loosing a limb but Isabelle’s limbs had all been severed. Derek’s death had taken her fucking heart with him.

She might find a new pack or she might not but she’d never have her family again. Cora and Peter still lived but they were never close to her, not like Derek had been. She shouldn’t have argued with him, shouldn’t have told him she didn’t want to be a part of his pack any longer. It wasn’t real; it had never been true- She’d just been frustrated and angry. It was all her fault the hunters found him…

They’d closed his casket, she couldn’t blame them- there was hardly enough left for identification much less an open casket. The hunters had seen to it Derek had no chance of coming back, even her father had been unable to think of a way to bring him back. Derek was gone…

And she was gone with him. There was no more Hale pack, no more Derek or Laura, no more Talia or Alpha Hale… All gone. Without them how was there to be an Isabelle? Loosing a member of your pack isn’t like loosing a limb, it’s like loosing your very essence.\
