First trip back to the @mfaboston since I left for college so I had to visit John Singer Sargent’s The Daughters of Edward Darley Bait and it’s vases- the actual vases depicted in the painting. Discovering this set as a child was a HUGE turning point in the way I thought about art. Abstractly, I *knew* that paintings represented real objects but somehow seeing the vases next to the painting allowed me to relate to the composition in a new way. I was dwarfed by the ceramics the same way the girls were and the room in the painting took on physical dimensionality. Now, as a maker of objects and a lover of craft, I think I can see why it felt so epic. The objects we surround ourselves with define our experiences in similar, overlapping and completely distinct ways fine art does.
