And while I’m thinking about how much choice Shane had in going to Ottawa, it’s genuinely so confusing to me that Rachel made the long game about Shane needing to learn to “choose Ilya over hockey” (which I have a number of problems with but that’s for another time) and then rips his agency away from him.
He gets outed, he gets essentially forced out of his team and is kind of left with no choice except to go to Ottawa. And yeah he has the moment with the commissioner where but like … I don’t really think saying he won’t run with the very unbelievable lie to cover his relationship (when he was already planning to come out soon) and basically ruin his relationship (after he’s proposed) is a significant choice showing agency.
Really feels like she still views Shane as a “bad partner” so she forces him into the things she views as commitment from Ilya (moving teams + wanting to come out) either as compensation/punishment, or so Ilya still remains the “selfless” one, or just another instance of her lack of care for Shane.
