Recondite: Silk (Hotflush Recordings)
The latest from German producer Lorenz Brunner finds him returning to Scuba’s Hotflush label for a fourth time, delivering the smooth, understated minimal techno that has made a name for himself over the last several years. Silk is an apt title given Brunner’s ability to craft subtly lush arrangements out of the sparest of parts, almost always underpinned by a steady and not too hard four-to-the-floor kick. And yet its art direction betrays the softness its title implies, instead presenting an image of carved stone.
Silk by Recondite
That contrast of hard and silky surfaces somehow feels appropriate; “Pour” strides at a good clip, its kick-hihat combo rarely letting up, but its airy, muted melodic elements lend it a melancholy, soft side. While it has all the makings of dancefloor utility, it evokes something more human and perhaps gloomy. “Channel” feels like an extension of that same ethos, with a very similar set of sounds and a sonar-like ping circling from channel to channel in the background. The title cut has synth elements that are more immediate, its spacious, reverberated syncopated chords, stabs, and flourishes touching on third-wave Detroit while its handsome, undulating low-end is likely to shake the floor on any good PA.
