Been thinking a lot lately about these kids we met in Honduras. There are so many Americans who never see what the rest of the world is like. Which I think is a problem. . . The American bubble doesn't acknowledge other experiences around the world. Or, if it does, it does so through a lens of fiction. Consumerism has pushed this idea that, "As long as I have that thing or this thing, life will be good. Better." . . But that's a kind of erasure, I think. It says that my experience is the only one that matters, because that commercial says I can't live without that thing. Meanwhile, people all over the world are living happy, exciting, productive lives without all those things. Does their experience not count? Do their lives somehow matter less because they don't have "the thing"? . . The obvious answer is, "Of course not," and yet... . . I've got way too many thoughts on this for one Instapost.
