The catch? One of them has to do something stupid, reckless, or otherwise humiliating.

Dealer's choice, of course.

Whumpee smells the BS a mile away but suddenly their friends all look at them. Whumpee is pushed into the proverbial ring, and when they try to protest, well, they're restrained, kept in place.

And as the hoots and hollers drown out Whumpee's pleas, a cold realization slices through their chest.

Human/sentient subject about to be put down as the experiment is over to keep the study "humane" and "ethical"

them being aware of what will happen when the study is over

them NOT being aware, just casually informed as the study is coming close to an end

scientist who grows fond of them and offers some comfort
