I loved my experience in online pvp rpgs
My only experience being Hordes.io
And it was (and is!) awesome. By character, Borhin Laden, was a great experience. I rped as a dutiful knight of our king Balius, reporting everything I've done each day and asking for his blessing (PS Balius is an NPC).
Borhin's backstory was that he's an old man who was once in the military, then went to a short period of peace life in the village and now is back on war by choice. Cranky, wise, full of jokes and dad puns sometimes. I loved rping as him.
Thing is those games give you inspiration. Any sort of roleplaying leads to worldbuilding: might it be the backstory of your character, their habits or whatever else. Videogames are fun and are a great tool to praise imagination. Just play pretend and see what happens.
