“never mind that, happy birthday!” he’d yell way too loud for the morning, hugging you tightly. 

“thanks mike.” 

“come on, get ready, it’s birthday breakfast time!” he’d state excitedly, pushing you into your room. 

and so for the rest of the day, you spent the day with your best friend, wondering where your boyfriend had gone. when you walked into your apartment, it was dark and that was odd because you had left the lobby light on and when you turned them on, you saw a trail of peach rose petals on the ground, as well as a bouquet of white lilies and a note.

you obliged, following the petals into the kitchen and then out onto the balcony where calum stood in a black button up and white bowtie. he had a huge smile on his face and was standing in front of a small table with a single red rose and your favourite meal, and kiss me by ed sheeran playing.

“you didn’t think i forgot your birthday did you?” you shook your head, hugging him tightly because no one had done something that special for you. 

“thank you, cal.”

“it hasn’t even started yet. let’s eat.” and so, you and calum had an amazing dinner, you telling him about your day with mike, he telling you about his day trying to find the perfect flowers.

and if someone asked you what the best birthday present you ever received was, you wouldn’t say it was the necklace he had gotten you, no you would say all the trouble he went through just to make this one moment happen.
