Our Interview with the Inventor of HydroHarvester
There are so many approaches and scales from which to solve the food security problem that we're passionate about here at Agritecture. One such approach is by bringing agriculture into our homes, which further capitalizes on our already climate controlled assets. Today, we’re talking with Andrew Verhasselt about his new home product -- the HydroHarvester -- that aims to make hydroponic growing accessible to every child. In our interview, Andrew explains the importance of introducing kids to the urban agriculture and technology space, and how his idea transformed from an ambition into a full-fledged product design. We hope you enjoy!

I was quite shocked when I saw that most of the leaves of one of the Guava trees had blown off in the last storm. Closer inspection showed that it was the older leaves and that there were lots and lots of new little ones. Consultation with Jelina, our resident expert on the topic of tropicals, reassured me that it was normal and that there would be a big burst soon and lots of fruit from the tree! We got near to 3 kg of fruit last year, I wonder how much we''ll get this year? #saurbanfood #gardening #homefarming #tropicalfruit #guava #urbanfarmer #homesteading #growyourownfood #fruittrees (at Gawler, South Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUq9Dy0BncR/?utm_medium=tumblr

Is Farming without soil possible?
Doing gardening without soil sounds interesting, it is called hydroponics. This is possible with technological advancement in this field. Not only for house plants, but you can do proper farming this way. There are many viable fruits, leafy vegetables as well as vines that grow well in this system. In the long run, it is a very profitable and clean system to work with.
So, what is the hype about hydroponics?
It comes from the Latin term, working water. It needs multiple plastic trough in a series to make this work. Water is the medium of supplying nutrients and oxygen as well. We may think that is a new way of doing things, but the basic idea had been used in ancient times as well. The hanging gardens of Babylon are made on the same principle. Nowadays the plastic trough has made it easier to use it even for a small scale plant growing in buildings.
What is the benefit of this system?
Minimal space is used in this type of farming. Their water usage is amazingly low. It is only 10% of the amount used in the traditional farming method. Easy to assemble parts like a plastic trough and net pots. It is an environmentally-friendly method of growing plants.
Various components of hydroponics:
You will need a few elements as a basic, to begin with, this method of farming. Growing media is a must. It is used instead of soil. It is there for support and does not give any nutrients. They are generally Ph neutral. Air stones and air pumps are needed to pass oxygen to the plants through the water. Also, this prevents them from drowning. Then there are net pots that allow the roots to grow the full length and go freely. They are not tangled and there is a healthy plant.
Like from another world! My third flush of oyster mushrooms from the @urban.farm.it kit I had for Christmas. Today is a good day. My laptop recovered from me spilling coffee all over it thanks to my very handy husband @codifyre.co.uk and after a mushroom omelette I’m off to the beach...finally. . . . #oystermushrooms #mushroomfarming #growyourownfood #homefarming #gooddayvibes (at Harrowby, Lincolnshire) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPXhdv5hFqf/?utm_medium=tumblr
The bee hives are starting to look like a comfy home! I just need to finish insulating them, then build the lid and trim and paint the hives. I suppose we'll need to build our buy the frames for the inside too 🐝 #beekeeping #beehive #homefarming #homefarm (at Clark County, Ohio) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPLvLieHLER/?utm_medium=tumblr
