What is and why do the Orthodox christians receive the Holy Unction?
Thanks for your question! I apologise for the large delay in reply.Ā
The mystery of the holy unction is such a special thing as through that, God can provide us with healing (both spiritual and physical). The mystery (as with all the mysteries of the Church) is only given to Orthodox Christians. Holy Unction is given to the parish members (in good standing) during Holy Week but is also given in private. However, I know from personal experience that it can be included at the end of the Liturgy for parish members who require it. It is also found throughout the whole Holy Tradition of the Church of Christ including the New Testament [James 5: 14-15].Ā
Holy Unction is done by the priest and parish members will approach to receive the holy oil. The priest will anoint them with the oil (making the sign of the Cross) on their forehead, eyes, ears, nostrils, lips, chest, hands and feet. Whilst doing this he prays,Ā āThe blessing of our Lord, God and Saviour Jesus Christ: for the healing of the soul and body of the servant of God, [name], always: now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amenā.Ā
Orthodoxwiki states that, āIt provides uplifting and asks for patience to accept the will of God whatever the physical outcome.ā. I want to draw Ā special attention to the second part of that quote.Ā
The Holy Unction is a mystery of the Church. It is not a magic spell or a magic ritual. If God wills a person to be healed then the healing will take place. That said, if for whatever reason God in His Wisdom chooses not to heal that person then they will not be healed (although they may be helped in a different way; being given the strength to deal with their affliction). There might be a great benefit for them in their affliction.
Iāll tell you an example from my priest; a lady had cancer but it was terminal. After she received the Mystery of Holy Unction the cancer disappeared and she went into remission. Another lady, also with cancer, received Holy Unction too but her body was not healed and she fell into repose.Ā
But yes, Holy Unction (as one of the Mysteries of the Church) is very important for all Orthodox Christians.Ā
