A quiet well nestled in St Mylor churchyard, with a small gully running down to the wall and presumably out into the harbour just beyond it. The well water continues to be used in baptisms - a deliberate choice to link the current congregation with the ancient history of the church & the possible site of very early baptisms.

Built over a spring in the 19th century, and named Sisters Fountain because the owners nieces liked to play in its vicinity. The spring is reputed to have gushed forth from a spot where Joseph of Arimathea struck the ground with his staff: a likely story!

Improvisation has always played a role throughout Pike’s long and diverse career in music. Whether as part of PVT, Triosk or Szun Waves, or collaborating with Liars, legendary jazz pianist Mike Nock, DD Dumbo or the mighty Bill Callahan, he has long been a responsive musician for whom sensitive listening leads to spontaneous invention. Every motion, from the most minuscule flicker to a primal groove, is an expression of what’s happening around him. Which is precisely how he, and the ensembles he’s been part of, have been able to navigate so deftly between the poles of the familiar. Pike’s work has alwaysskirted around electronica, spiritual jazz, post-rock and many other recognisable sounds, without ever converging on one single style or resorting to obvious fusions. 15 - Lo Wen / Lo Wen
Lo Wen is a holy spring. Or, rather, it is a spring that has had tribute paid to it for so long that people assume it must be holy. It doesn’t appear to have any health benefits - in fact, the people that drink the water often get a grotesque, hacking cough a few days later. But it inspires all who see it a deep and urgent need to offer libation, not out of reverence, but out of dread.
Lo Wen is one of the spirits of the spring. Libations offered into the well’s tarry, slightly sulphurous waters are as if poured directly down his open throat. It enjoys whisky, milks from various diseased animals, and blood. A particularly fruitful week will give Lo Wen enough physical form to roam the countryside a bit, terrifying anyone who sees its pallid, glistening body limping inexpertly about the fields. It tells the spring’s other, less corporeally-minded spirits what it has seen on its journeys, and they marvel together at the notions of “roads” and “sheep” and “terrified tourists”.
