Warm Nights and Quiet Lights
I love the lights, the softness of music in every corner, and how everything seems to glow a little warmer than usual. I love the way people slow down, talk softer, and try—at least for two weeks—to be kinder. There’s a sweetness in the air that makes the world feel calm, even if only briefly.
And yet, I’m not religious. I don’t believe in the spiritual part of Christmas, but I do believe in what it represents. I love the symbolism so much that I never fall into the claws of consumerism—partly because of principle and partly because I’m, let’s be honest, a total savings goblin. A frugal little creature. A cozy rat hoarding coins for winter.
Tradition changes, too, and that makes it even better. I’m a vegetarian in a vegan family, which means our Christmas table is just… delicious in another way. The recipes evolve every year, but the values stay the same: care, intention, choosing kindness, and sharing what we have.
We don’t need meat, miracles, or mountains of gifts to make it meaningful. We just need each other on Christmas.
So I hope yesterday and today were full of warmth for you.
I hope you got to celebrate with the kind of family that matters: biological, adoptive, chosen, or—if you’re very lucky—a wonderful mix of them all. And if your Christmas was quiet, I hope at least you felt safe. When loneliness has struck me on important dates, I have always found a warm refuge in reading and fanfiction, so I wish you something similar, if not the same.
Merry Christmas to those who celebrate.
Happy cozy winter nights to everyone.
May your hands stay warm, your heart stay gentle, and your wallet stay safe from holiday capitalism 🎄✨
