Taking a cue from this guy! #hoboart (at Rio del Mar, California)
Cupid’s Rising, the Art
Bout the time I was well into the first chapter of my comic book, Cupid’s Rising, I went with Moon into the park. The flycatcher birds were flying this perfect grid pattern that day. People were dancing and singing. Children were laughning, grills were cooking.
And when I read the bible, it said, Two loves went into the garden and were among the angels.
That’s around when my shoes fell apart. So I had to go barefoot that day. I collected palm fronds and corn husks and wove a pair of sandals.
Wore them back to the place to get new shoes. But those sandals were so comfortable.
I never liked to beg for things, asking for handouts wasn’t something I thought was necessary. There was always something to use, this is Earth after all.
I remember having this conversation with my occult teacher, about the names of God. He told me he used to walk circles speaking Yeshua. The staff hated him for it, said it was blasphemy. That none of his neighbors believed like he did. He said things changed, and I showed up, and we became friends that understood god like others didn’t.
One of my places I used to visit near the beach, was a Barnes and Nobles, they had this section on the third floor, of graphic novels and comic books. I used to look for the strange ones. One of my childhood friends of the family used to tell me to collect graphical books, the ones that no one else liked as much, and keep them for yourself. That’s when I saw Habibi.
It was so beautifully drawn, and the story so amazing. I never finished reading it in time. I now own a copy and see how some of my own life was in there a bit. With the mysticism, the spiritual walk, the river, the friendships, the angels, the refuge.
The river… I’ve seen faces, you wouldn’t want to know. People that take advantage of those with little willpower in them, who’ve given up on their homes and selves. They prey on the weak. Get them hooked on meth. Women would show up, without a home, and these people would get them on sick drugs, and use them for sex. Eventually a black car would show up and take them somewhere. They would come back with horror stories of drug addiction and sex. That’s all they were to them. And the women would look less attractive as the meth or heroine ate them up.
And the police did nothing about it.
The place did not keep security for long, but every now and then they would hire one, keep the cul-de-sac empty, but after it was emptied, they’d fire the guard. And it would all start over again.
One year, I was back with my mother, and my friend calls me up. I had helped him get into the group home after years of his travels. He told me they had found bodies of the homeless chopped up in bags. He said he hated living in a place where drug addicts abused themselves and no one gave any two cents about it.
Moon’s friendship was odd. One moment she was calm, and just wanted tobacco. The next she was upset. She had a mood disorder.
When I got stable permanent housing, I wrote the angels’ names in Hebrew and wrote them letters. Sometimes people would show up that looked like the images out of the book Habibi, and would ask what I wanted to do.
After a while, I was stable in my mind a bit more. That’s when I asked mother for a computer. A refurbished dell. The thing would go to bluescreen or freeze up when I went to smoke or pee. It was so hard to write on but it worked.
The first image I drew, I was in the park. I finally had received the paper and pencils, and I was sitting with moon. She had just gotten back from the store with some Gatorade and snacks. And I had drawn a bird carrying grain in talon, with this exotic tail. Under it rain fell.
When I looked up, I see the bird, this brown dove, with a grass grain in talon, and the feather. I was amazed, I told Moon and she couldn’t see it. Some children over heard wanting to see the bird and went after it. Apparently one of the kids saw it. But when it happened, no one was looking in its direction I could see.
It was really for me I guess.
Later once the chapter was done she wrote on the work. She liked marking on my works for some reason.
