Before, it wasn't my choice. This time, it is. When I was two years old I was diagnosed with leukemia. I fought hard through three years of cancer treatment; adult doses of chemotherapy every single day, countless needles and pills, and all of the horrors one could not even imagine of battling cancer. I lost my hair three times in the process, and, with everything else going on such as not knowing whether I'd live to see the next day, it took a hit to my self-esteem and I could not even handle my own parents looking at me, let alone smiling at me. My dad had the idea to start a fundraising event in my honour which would support children like me going through cancer or other life threatening illnesses, and he called it the "St. Valentine's Day Hair Massacre". 15 years later, the "Hair Massacure" is a multi-million dollar charitable event supporting the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation and the Make-A-Wish Foundation which attracts thousands upon thousands of people the the West Edmonton Mall Ice Palace each year. So far, we have raised over $11 million which has gone toward making incredible advances in cancer research and has helped to alleviate some of the harshness of going through cancer treatment. My journey with cancer started almost 17 years ago, and although I am now almost 14 years cancer free, the journey never ends. I have decided this year to donate my hair, after having lost it three times in cancer treatment, to somebody whose shoes I was once in who doesn't have a choice when it comes to losing their hair. My fundraising goal is $10,000 and I have raised about 29% of that so far, and so I could use all of the help I can get to reach that goal.
