A one-year-old baby with more than 15,000 followers on Instagram has become one of the Britain’s youngest ever “influencers”, earning hundreds of dollars per photo.
It is amazing the amount of money that can be made through social media marketing. Influencers can be any age and come from a variety of different backgrounds. Meet Ralphie. The baby’s mother claims they have gotten over $10,000 worth of free merchandise which includes more than 200 free outfits, bedroom furniture, toys and eight prams, while the family have been treated to free meals, salon treatments, luggage, a king size mattress, and trips to tourist destinations including Peppa Pig World all from companies who want to place their brand in the picture with Ralphie. His mother started the Instagram page for friends and family, but quickly gained over 1,000 followers. She then realized Ralphie could be an influencer. Since then Ralphie and the family earn $650 per photo. Social media marketing is very important and something that people with tons of followers need to take seriously because there is big money involved.

“Yeah! Well of course we’re working on it,” Facebook’s head of augmented reality Ficus Kirkpatrick told me when I asked him at TechCrunch’s AR/VR event in LA if Facebook was building AR glasses. “We are building hardware products. We’re going forward on thi…
Facebook is working on building augmented reality glasses! Bringing social media to the world of AR is something we all saw coming. Will this form a successful bridge between the virtual world of social media and the real world, or will it ultimately create a distraction from being in the current moment?
The Facebook AR glasses will use waveguide display with a two dimensional scanner. This technology creates a superimposed virtual image on top of a live image of the physical world. Other companies are using this technology already, such as Microsoft’s HoloLens AR headset and the Magic Leap One. For Facebook to over come the clunkiness of their glasses and supply a strong enough battery in such a small space, will be a true obstacle for them to overcome.
Snapchat’s spectacles are already a thing consumers can purchase, but with only the ability to take photos and video, Facebook’s AR glasses will be sure to have a market of their own in terms of social media glasses. Just think about it, advertisers paying to use Facebook’s AR software to create superimposed advertisements anywhere they want, without the need for buying real estate for traditional print and digital media. How can Facebook not deliver such a useful tool to push along the future of advertisement. Plus social interactions with friends will be much more intuitive. Perhaps this technology will allow you to see who you have friended on Facebook just by looking at them. Or your friends most recent Facebook posts will be hovering above their head. Or maybe even see a Yelp review of a restaurant just at first glance! Don’t forget about how immersive Candy Crush Saga will be. It seems as if this technology is limitless.
With the meaning of engagement placed on a whole new level, how will businesses really be using this technology. What does wearable, and most importantly, comfortable AR mean for consumers and their privacy. Too much is still new in this market in order to properly determine the implications, however, many will probably see this social media leap as another convenient way to connect with friends, receive their news, and entertain themselves; but don’t forget about the obvious, making day to day tasks easier with technology. These glasses will be sure to build Facebook’s social community, social publishing, social commerce, and social entertainment. We can only hope that this won’t take too many people away from actual reality.
