Canada's biggest labour body agreed to cut ties with its Israeli counterpart
The largest labour organization in Canada has committed to cutting ties with Israelās trade federation, the Histadrut.
A resolution passed at the constitutional convention of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) in Winnipeg earlier this month also calls on the Canadian government to support a two-way arms embargo, suspend the Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement and condemn Israeli settlement expansion.
Kevin MacKay, who attended the convention as a delegate from the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), told PressProgress that, when it came time for the vote, āWe had a lot of the biggest labour leaders in the hall lining up at the mic to either speak or show support for the resolution.ā

Schools, offices and airport close as trade union says general strike needed to āshake those who need to be shakenā over inaction

Israelās first nationwide general strike since the Hamas attacks of 7 October, which was convened in support of a deal to free hostages held in Gaza, has ended after eight hours with a court order for workers to go back to their jobs.
The strike was organised amid widespread public anger at the governmentās handling of the war in Gaza after theĀ discovery of the bodies of six hostagesĀ at the weekend.
It was called by Israelās largest trade union, Histadrut, from 6am on Monday, closing government and municipal offices as well as schools and many private businesses. Israelās international airport, Ben Gurion, was reported to have shut down at 8am local time (6am BST) for two hours.
The Tel Aviv labour court ordered an end to the strike on Monday, ruling that it was politically motivated and had not been called for economic reasons.
The chair of Histadrut, Arnon Bar-David, said in a statement before the strike: āI have come to the conclusion that only our intervention can shake those who need to be shaken.
āA deal is not progressing due to political considerations and this is unacceptable.ā
The Israeli finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich ā a far-right leader who opposes a truce in the war ā was among those who had called on the court to move to ban the strike.
The strike action took place afterĀ tens of thousands of Israelis took to the streetsĀ on Sunday night, cutting off the Ayalon highway, the motorway running through the heart of Tel Aviv, and lighting fires in the streets. A few dozen police officers tried to contain the protest but were unable to push it back. Local media reported that 29 people had been arrested.
The union called the strike after the Hostages and Missing Families Forum campaign group backed the idea in order to force the government to reach a deal for the return of the remaining hostages taken during Hamasās attacks on 7 October. Israelās opposition leader Yair Lapid also supported the move.
Israeli trade union Histadrut called for a strike that was later ordered to be halted over the nationās handling of hostage release talks.
However, this was very limited progress in comparison with the Jewish society ā a disparity which mainstream Israeli sociologists pinned on the nature of the Arab minority and which critical sociologists later on would blame on Israelās discriminatory policies. Like colonialist powers before them, the Israeli politicians and officials
expected that this limited modernization would satisfy the Palestinian
minority, but it did not. The undeniable improvement in the communityās standard of living was judged by the Palestinians not according to past realities, but according to how they fared in comparison to the Jewish members of the society, and that exercise ended in great dismay and outrage. Not all of the complex realities of the Palestinian society can or should be attributed to Israeli policy. This was a society in a Middle East that was transforming slowly and dialectically from the old world of Ottoman rule and traditional values into an age of nationalism and global capitalism. And, as elsewhere in the Middle East, old social patterns still affected life, even in places where brutal modern policies from above were trying to eradicate them, as was case in Ataturkās Turkey and in the Shahās Iran.
