When the day comes that I see someone like myself in a tv show or a movie I will cry. Someone who is brown like me, who is smart like me, who is on screen for more than five minutes at a time. Someone who isn’t a joke. I’m so tired of seeing Latinx characters being treated as the gag character, as that throw away comic relief character! Or the token Hispanic character that comes out to say some quick bit in Spanish before never being seen again. Give me characters who are smart and beautiful and who are proud to be who they are. I’m so tired of watching a cop show and knowing that every time I see a dark skinned Hispanic they are going to be the bad guy. It’s like the media is incapable of showing us in a good light. Shows like Cristela, or Grand Hotel where Latinx characters are real people, successful people are cancelled and taken off the air. I know people are going to comment below with examples but why do you feel the need to list them to name them. Even if you name as many as you can it’s not enough! We are given scraps of representation and we eat it up every time because we don’t know when we’ll get something like that again. Like Joaquin Torres from tfatws, I got so excited when I saw him and then he only came out for like 5 minutes each episode. But we hyped him up because we have to show them that we care. So maybe one day they’ll care about us enough to give us what we want. What we deserve, representation.
