So Pitch was reasonably confused when he came upon the supposed Dragon Tamer, sitting by the ocean with his fabled beast behind him, as thin as a twig and as young as fifteen. He was writing in a book, completely alone, and capturing him was as easy as snapping his fingers. Using his shadows, he encompassed the boy, and dragged him and his beast to his lair hidden in the ground. He locked him away in moments, separating him from the beast, and the young Tamer immediately began to fight. He threw himself against the bars of his birdcage, yelling at Pitch to let him go, but with a little surge of fear, the young tamer was on his knees, shaking. Pitch knew he couldn’t keep him debilitated the entire time—after all, who would teach him how to train dragons that way? He just had to sedate him for a while, force him to calm down, then they could talk about the dragon business.

Pitch gave the young Tamer his space for a day, and when he approached him, he saw the young boy sitting in the middle of the cage, no longer shaking. He was frowning, of course, and he merely stared up at Pitch challengingly. Pitch approached the bird cage, standing on the catwalk just beside it, and he grabbed one of the twisted black bars, “Are you the Dragon Tamer?”

“I have a name,” He replied, crossing his arms, “I’m not just my title.”

“Name or not, you are him, aren’t you?” Pitch clarified, narrowing his eyes. So the kid had a little sass. That was fine with him. Nothing he couldn’t break.

“… yes.” He finally revealed, keeping his eyes locked with Pitch’s, “What’s your title, then?”

“I am the God of Fear—”

“And you want dragons? What, you’re not scary enough with that get-up?”

Pitch had to take a moment to clarify if he just heard him correctly.

“Excuse me?” Pitch huffed, absolutely insulted, and the Tamer waved a dismissive hand at him.

“Come on, you’re in black robes, your skin looks like soot, and your hair is thicker than my ankle. I think you have the fear thing up to par. Why dragons?”

“One cannot be too careful when it comes to fear.” Pitch tried to explain, but the Tamer wouldn’t have it.

“If you’re a God, then why would you waste your time on mortal beings like dragons? People want dragons for war or for prestige. That’s why I don’t let them take them. But a God has all the prestige he needs already, even one I haven’t heard of. He can cause war at the snap of his fingers. He wouldn’t need dragons.”

Pitch glared at the Tamer, trying to decide what, exactly, was going through this boy’s head, and he finally hissed out, “What’s your name?”

“What’s yours?” the Tamer bit back, still keeping eye contact. They leered at each other for a while longer, then Pitch sighed through his nose and linked his arms together behind his back, beginning to pace before the cage.

“A God often makes enemies with other Gods, you know. It has come to my attention that my… reign over the lands is being threatened with a possible end because of said other Gods.” Pitch told him, keeping his eyes on the floor, the walls, anywhere but the Tamer, who merely stared at him.

“And you think mortal creatures can kill an immortal one?” He asked, making Pitch smirk.

“Yes,” He answered simply, “I do. Gods are not as indestructible as one may think they are.”

The Tamer finally looked away, weighing this new bit of information in his mind, and when he spoke again, he kept his head down, “So you want a dragon to kill the other Gods… but wouldn’t that put the world in chaos? Wouldn’t that bring imbalance?”

“I have been in control for centuries, my child… They are the ones who bring imbalance.”

The Tamer looked up at Pitch once more, his green eyes sparkling with doubt, but the next words he spoke let Pitch know that he was finally beginning to believe him.

“I’m Hiccup…”

Pitch stopped his pacing, his right side facing Hiccup, and he replied, “And I’m Pitch.”

“The dragons have been disappearing recently. The tides are coming closer to the village. Just last week, there was a volcanic eruption in the middle of what looked like glaciers. You’re telling me that this is all because those other Gods came?” Hiccup asked, getting to his feet carefully, the cage swinging a little with the movements. Pitch reached out and held onto the bars, keeping the cage steady enough for Hiccup to stay standing.
