This is Babatunde Akinboboye, aka HipHopera Guy on YouTube. I don’t normally go for opera, personally, but this performance is fascinating and he has many videos talking about linguistics, especially pertaining to Yorùbá (which I have been horribly mispronouncing this whole time). He’s also just extremely charismatic and funny.
Bump this in your jeeps! Zakiyyah's official Shades of Black: The Hip-Hopera music video is here!
About 4 weeks ago, a video showed up of this man singing an aria from The Marriage of Figaro to a hip hop beat. I absolutely adored it and was so excited to see him come out with another one today. If you like what you hear and have the money to spare, go to his Indigogo campaign and pledge some money to get him to make an album of his new hiphopera style!
Highlights from the Babatunde Hiphopera show:
ALL OF IT
okay, I know, that's not what highlights means, so. highlights:
-getting the audience to sing part of Toreador with him -serenading a grandmotherly lady with O Sole Mio and getting fully upstaged by her in the process -Vendetta. VENDETTA -his walk-up song for Act II was Not Like Us. Drake found dead in a ditch again for like the 500th time -COOOOORTIGIANI VIL RAZZA DANNAAAAATAAAAA (rigoletto is my opera of all time idc idc) -all through it he tells a loose story of his life and how he got into classical music as intros to the various songs, and Cortigiani was him talking about his fury with the gatekeepers of classical music and how he and his peers struggled with their dreams being taken from them -he did Con Te Partiro' and what can I say. I am a sucker -Largo al factotum della citta' as his encore song. I mean. You Gotta. His cover of it with the instrumentals from Kendrick Lamar's HUMBLE. in 2018 is what put him on the map -COMES TO FIND OUT HIS DJ FOR THE NIGHT?? HE MET LIKE 10 HOURS PRIOR because US airlines are racist af and did a last minute fraud hold on his (Nigerian) payment for his DJ's (also Nigerian) flight, thus stranding the DJ the day of. He woke up to like 12 missed calls and had to scramble. Champagne Shak saved the day AND you could not tell at all that they hadn't been working together the whole time. I have exactly zero professional music exp so idk maybe this is a thing DJs are just supposed to be able to do but I personally was blown away
had the time of my life, 13/10, he hasn't had the chance to even leave Philly yet and I already want him to come back

THANOS A Divine Dichotomy) - REVERB360 The Wild Beast Beat Tape
Thee baddest villain in MU. The man who intrinsically shows the divinity of duality and the significance of purpose. Driven by the desire to fulfil an unquestionable destiny. Thanos represents the nature of the consciousness of man. Encapsulating the mortifying outcomes of what the titan believes to be a righteous way to end the suffering of man. The concept of sacrifice is not new to us in Africa. Shaka was much akin to Thanos; indeed embodying the divine dichotomy of knowing to do right and understanding the wrongs and their outcomes and taking the onus of that responsibility. This beat, designs the tenacity of Thanos for the ears. It traps you into a moment that may make you feel chivalrous and driven. Ambitious, to say the least
