Some HIMYM finale thoughts...
Presently watching the documentary Every Little Step for the umpteenth time in honour of A Chorus Lineβs 40th anniversary, and there was a part in there that made me think of HIMYM...
During previews, the character of Cassie doesn't get the job in the chorus. And that left the audience leaving the theatre pretty bummed. Then someone told Michael Bennett that it didn't make sense for Cassie to not get the part. The audience was alienated, and he couldn't just not let her get it just because HE wanted it that way. So he changed the ending, and it made all the difference.
