Every time we breathe, we pull the world into our bodies: water vapor and oxygen and carbon and particulate matter and aerosols. We become the outside through our breath, our food, and our porous skin. ...
What is going on around us? What art is there to be made?
Looking at Contemporary Art
“I go back and forth between wanting to be abundantly simple and maddeningly complex.” -John Baldessari Minimalism, Post-Minimalism, Zombie Formalism, Conceptual Art, Installation, Post-Conceptual Art, Performance Art, Pop, Graffiti, Appropriation and Video. What do these formal genres mean and does anyone really know? There are as many ways to create art as there are artists who use an infinite variety of medium and ideas to reflect on contemporary society. Hillyer and Adah Rose Gallery invite you to join our distinguished and dynamic panel of professionals as we attempt to decipher the myriad ways of looking and thinking about Contemporary Art. Our panel includes: Harry Cooper, curator and head of modern art at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. Sharon Fishel, artist and ArtReach Director, McLean Project for the Arts Mark Jenkins, writer on art, film, music and other topics for the Washington Post, NPR and Blurt Waad Tammaa, Architect, International Development Specialist and Art Enthusiast Moderated by Sharon Burton. The free program will begin at 7:00 pm and will include ample time for comments and questions.
Chris Valle explores the themes of excess and consumption in our society, depicting the human body as a commodity. “The idealized body is the focal point of nearly every commercial and is the center of any noteworthy ad. The commodities that are actually being advertised, such as food or cars, are worth nothing without the commodities that the bodies posing for it actually bring.” -Chris
Come check out Chris’ paintings at Hillyer Art Space, up through October 31st.
