Walks in the germanic philology class with a t-shirt that says “Hildebrand was the original DILF”
This is an official request to tell me the story behind this.
I really, really want to know.
Okay, so
There's this Old High German poem by anonymous that starts like this: "Hiltibrant enti Hadubrant untar herion tuem", meaning that they're on different sides of a battle. Which wouldn't be all that bad, but it turns out that they're father and son. They have to fight, however, and they do.
And then the poem just stops. We don't know who's gonna win, but it would be a tragedy both ways: either father kills son and obliterates his line, or son kills father and that's no good either. Them making peace is not really an option because hey, it's war, and they're heroes.
Apparently there's some later versions where people invented an ending, but I don't know much about those.
So I had this really stupid idea to make them not related by blood but romantically involved, and then I adapted part of the beginning of Romeo and Juliet. The rest of this admittedly crack-y story, apart from the flashbacks, follows the original poem quite closely. I took it as a challenge to stay as close as possible and still develop that romantic dynamic.
And that's how I ended up writing my first fanfiction for a piece of medieval literature on a whim.

The Hildebrandslied is one of the oldest texts we have from the German language. The Old High German text is the oldest and only example of a Germanic Heroic Epic. The story itself existed long before it was written down in the 9th Century and serves as an example of the oral tradition in storytelling. The story was written on a biblical text found in Fulda and is merely a fragment. The story is written in alliterative verse (Stabreim), which was typical for German poetry from this time. The story introduces Hildebrand and his son, Hadubrand. Hadubrand has never met his father until he unknowingly meets him on the battlefield. Hildebrand asks Hadubrand to say who he is, and Hadubrand introduces himself as the son of Hildebrand, a man who abandoned him and his mother to flee with Theodoric (he eventually became king of Italy). He believes his father to be dead until Hildebrand admits who he is. The men begin to fight, and the story ends there. However, because similar stories exist in other cultures, we can assume that Hildebrand kills Hadubrand. The original text is under the cut :)

I wrote a fic!
Inspired by the most recent topic of a lecture @swanfloatieknight and I attend.
"With Almighty God in Heaven for a witness, may you never go to battle against your next of kin." And he took from his arm a band of rings, braided from the emperor's gold, which the King of the Huns had given to him. "I give you this in friendship." Hadubrand, the son of Hildebrand, replied: "A gift should be received with a spear, point against point. You are a cunning old Hun, leading me into a trap with your words, only to throw your spear at me. You have grown old by practicing such treachery. Sailors traveling westward across the Mediterranean Sea told me that he fell in battle. Hildebrand, the son of Heribrand, is dead." Hildebrand, the son of Heribrand, replied: "I see from your battle gear that you have a good master at home, and that you have never been banished by your prince. ..... Alas, Lord God, fate has struck. Sixty times I have seen summer turn to winter and winter to summer in a foreign land. I was always placed on the front lines; I was never killed while storming a fortress, and now my own child should strike me with his sword and hit me with his ax, if I don't kill him first. But if you have the courage, you can easily win the armor from an old man like me, and take away the spoils, if you have any right to them."
