I was there only a minute or two when a little girl of 11-12 with no pack approached and said "hello." I replied with my own "hello" as she walked by the shelter, then asked if she was looking for the privy. "No," she said, she was looking for the trail. "To the summit," I asked, "Piper Trail?!" "Yes," she said. I told her she had gotten off of it a good bit and was on the shelter spur. She said, "oh," looking a little confused. I ended my break right then and there and asked her to follow me back to the junction. When we got there she and I hiked maybe two or three tenths when I finally encountered her mother and an aunt. I told the adults in front the of the girl that as a professional guide my motto is "go in together, stay together, and leave together." I also told them I generally instruct my guests (even though I insist they stay within ear shot) that they always stop and junctions and stream crossings. It's how it is, it is how we keep people safe. I left them and proceeded to the summit. On the way I ran into three other kids, around the same age as the little girl. They had already summited and where coming down. None of them had any gear either. They were looking for the two women so they could eat and drink. The women had probably acquired the ridge by then so they were close. I told them how I helped their sister from a possibly bad experience. They sounded genuinely grateful. I told them like I told the two women those words to live by. They eagerly soaked it all in (smart kids) and thanked me for that, too. It ended up being a beautiful day on the mountain for everyone today. This almost wasn't the case. I imagine had I not been there she would have been frightened. And that could have been just the start as things unfolded from there. How it all played out would have relied on a series of the right moves by all involved parties. Missing this today! I still think about our hike all the time and about how hard it was, and how frustrating and how amazing and rewarding and thrilling. It’s weird (but cool) to have been walking together for ten hours and realize that you’ve been talking the whole time.
