On some weeks, they are so hard to decide. Might have been because there were too many options to pick from, or just plainly because of an uneventful week. This week though, it was dead clear. It’s my new iPhone.

Looking back, this is my 7th iPhone since switching from the Samseng Omnia in 2009. Like last year, I felt the need to rank them once again. This time, comparing how much I enjoyed after getting my hands on them. (Last year was about how much I yearned to get them in the desire meter).

Here goes:

7. iPhone 5S

The two S models are definitely at the bottom of the pile. They were minor upgrades over their predecessors of the same form factor. TouchID was introduced on the 5S, but it didn’t resonate much with me then, until much later when iOS 8 brought its integration with 1Password.

6. iPhone 4S

Once again, the flagship feature introduced here on the 4S, Siri never got to me either. In fact, I’m still not using it today, four years since it was launched. The 4S ranked slightly ahead of the 5S because it turned out to be my first white iPhone

5. iPhone 4

The iPhone 4 had the first retina screen, but back then, it wasn’t a big deal to me. I only bought it cos I had an available contract to buy a phone at the subsidised rate. Though it still felt good getting it back then, it didn’t seem like a big upgrade over the 3GS. Obviously, looking back now, it was a huge step forward in the iPhone’s history.

4. iPhone 5

Next in line was the first screen size change, albeit a small one. The iPhone 5 was an improvement over the 4S, but it was somewhat subdued, (when comparing against the 6es) being only slightly taller and with an extra row of icons.

3. iPhone 6S Plus

The very reason that triggered me in doing a ranking is because the latest one inspired me. It may not have scaled the heights of the top two later in the countdown, but I have definitely experienced “the only thing that’s changed is everything”. Watching the keynote a few weeks ago, the urge to upgrade didn’t initially batter me. But after getting my hands on it on Monday, the impact really did finally kick in. 3D touch, the new lightning fast TouchID, and the speed improvements overall really made the experience much, much better.

2. iPhone 6

The iPhone 6 last year was the top of my desire meter. And it was for a good reason. It was the first time there was significant change in the screen size. Granted, the iPhone 5 had a bigger screen than the 4S, but going from 4 to 4.7 inches was way of a magnitude more pleasing.

1. iPhone 3GS

6 years on, it still reigns at the summit. Hands down, the top of the pile 3GS was way ahead of everyone else. The transition was truly magical, coming from the shitty Omnia, running crappy Windows Mobile. I was no longer required to behave like an animal, using a stylus to interact with my phone. It was super responsive, and despite the Omnia having some shitty data connectivity (and plan), I wasn’t able to do much internet surfing nor news reading. The first iPhone changed all of that. As I’ve said before, my life was literally transformed.
