A typical Athenian women born to two citizens, were far better off then slaves or non citizens, but that doesn’t mean that had many rights. They lived under the supervision of their parents/guardians until they were married, which was usually at a much younger age then the average person today. Their marriages were arranged for them, and when they were married, the husband became the women’s guardian. Athenians believed that women were “emotional creatures” and needed a man to take care of them. They weren’t allowed to own many personal items, maybe a slave or two though. If you couldn’t already tell, marriage wasn’t for love. It was simply so that the women could have someone to look after them when it was acceptable to marry, so that they could take over the domestic duties. Looking after children, spinning and weaving, making sure slaves were doing their jobs was all part of it. The only time they were ever let to go somewhere besides where they reside was to attend, funerals, festivities, and religious gatherings. Sometimes if the husband had guests over, his wife was to keep out of sight. Being so, if you lived in the Athens in that era, you would rarely see a women in the public eye. “The less they saw their wives, the better it was because they considered them boring.”
